About The Position

The Department of Comparative Literature at Tulane University is seeking a tenure-line Assistant Professor specializing in Asian Studies. The ideal candidate will be a comparatist working across languages, literatures, or media, with interests in areas such as Global Asias, Transpacific or Indian Ocean Studies, gender and sexuality studies, science and technology studies, and the history of the book. While language instruction is not a primary component, research proficiency in one or more Asian languages is expected, along with advanced conversational abilities in at least one regional language. The department is newly established and committed to reimagining comparative literature, welcoming colleagues who wish to contribute to its future development and the newly approved major. The Asian Studies program is interdisciplinary, offering undergraduate majors and minors with a multi-disciplinary approach to Asian cultures and languages, and includes offerings in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese. Tulane University is investing in the humanities, with the Tulane Global Humanities Center offering robust programming. The position is located in New Orleans, a city rich in multilingual, multiethnic, and multicultural encounters.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Comparative Literature, Asian Studies with a humanities focus, or a related field.
• Commitment to comparative and interdisciplinary studies.
• Established record of scholarship.
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching.
• Ability to create new courses.
• Work in one or more Asian languages as a research language.
• Advanced/near native conversational abilities in at least one language of the region(s).

• Engage with or complement our language programs, both in Asian Studies and across the School of Liberal Arts.

Responsibilities

• Teach core courses in Comparative Literature and Asian Studies.
• Teach a variety of literary and cultural topics to draw students to both programs.
• Contribute to the formation of a new and growing department.
• The teaching load for tenure-line faculty is two courses per semester.
