About The Position

Assistant Professors are Clinical Faculty at the University of Colorado School of Medicine that will work in the Children's Hospital Colorado (CHCO) Network of Care (NOC) including Emergency Departments in Colorado. In this role, Instructors will provide medical care to acutely ill and injured pediatric patients age birth to 26 years. They will perform history taking, physical examinations, define and execute appropriate workup that leads to diagnosis with treatment and disposition plan.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Degree
  • Board certification and eligibility in Pediatric Emergency Medicine or Emergency Medicine.
  • Active certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support
  • Active Colorado Medical License
  • Active Colorado State DEA license
  • Two or more years' experience in pediatric acute care environment
  • Experience teaching medical students and residents
  • Completion of fellowship training in Pediatric Emergency Medicine.
  • Experience with pediatric patient population; pediatric emergency, critical care or urgent care exposure ideal
  • POCUS trained
  • Use of electronic medical record (EPIC)
  • Teaching of medical learners
  • Effectively and respectfully field calls from referring physicians to facilitate referral to site appropriate for presenting problem/service requested and transport to site
  • Interpretation of plain radiographs
  • Foreign body removal
  • Laceration repair, including vermillion border and nail bed repair
  • Incision and drainage
  • Reduction of minor digit fractures or joint dislocations
  • Nerve blocks
  • Lumbar puncture
  • IV fluid management of electrolyte and endocrine derangements
  • Acute respiratory care
  • Intubation (ongoing yearly skills training mandatory)
  • Pediatric resuscitation (must maintain PALS certification and complete required annual mock resuscitations)
  • Procedural Sedation (must obtain credentialing at CHCO)
  • Work efficiently in a fast paced, acute care environment for 8-12 hours at a time
  • Promote teamwork amongst nurses, techs, learners, and colleagues
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Work a mix of days, evening, overnights, weekend, and holiday shifts

Nice To Haves

  • Some advanced techniques for laceration repair can be learned on job
  • Reduction of minor digit fractures or joint dislocations can be learned on job
  • Do not need to hold previous credentials for Procedural Sedation but must obtain credentialing at CHCO. Process in place for education and assisting with obtaining credentials.

Responsibilities

  • Provide medical care to acutely ill and injured pediatric patients age birth to 26 years.
  • Perform history taking, physical examinations, define and execute appropriate workup that leads to diagnosis with treatment and disposition plan.
  • Provide coverage for 1,376 hours at Children's Hospital Colorado, Anschutz and Network of Care locations.
  • Provide pediatric emergency care, pediatric observation unit medicine, and jeopardy shifts.
  • Maintain active medical staff privileges at all other facilities where ED or urgent care services are provided by the Children’s Hospital Colorado NOC unless specifically excluded.
  • Attend at least 75% of the monthly joint section and operational updates meetings of the Section of Emergency Medicine.
  • Participate in Children’s Hospital Colorado Main OR with anesthesiology one time per year to maintain airway skills.
  • Participate in other technical seminars as deemed by the section and/or practice site.
  • Provide clinical teaching of Medical Students, Family Practice Residents and Pediatric Residents.
  • Provide clinical supervision and support of onboarding for Advanced Practice Providers.
  • Attend and participate in required Section monthly meetings.
  • Participate in Quality Improvement and development of Clinical Care Guidelines.
  • Maintain skills required for provision of high quality, patient centered, safe urgent/emergent care of children.
  • Complete two half-day Acute Care Education sessions per academic year.
  • Complete one high fidelity code simulation at the Simulation Center at CHCO and at least one code simulation at a local NOC site per academic year.
  • Maintain PALS certification.
  • Maintain CME relevant to clinical work.
  • Attend other technical seminars as deemed mandatory by the section and/or practice site.
