About The Position

The Department of Chemical and Nano Engineering (CNE) at the Jacobs School of Engineering, University of California San Diego, is seeking an outstanding scholar for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level. The department focuses on integrating chemical engineering, nanoengineering, materials science, and emerging technologies to address critical challenges in human health, energy, sustainability, and manufacturing. The successful candidate will establish an innovative and externally funded research program at the intersection of nanosensing, wearable technologies, diagnostics, and healthcare applications. Research can encompass fundamental science, engineering, device development, and translation to real-world healthcare applications. Areas of interest include nanosensors, biosensors, wearable/implantable sensing technologies, point-of-care diagnostics, micro/nanoscale devices, lab-on-a-chip systems, advanced nanomaterials, bioelectronic interfaces, multiplexed sensing, AI-enabled diagnostics, and emerging technologies for health data acquisition. Candidates connecting fundamental principles with healthcare technologies, or working in related emerging areas, are encouraged to apply. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in a relevant engineering or science discipline by the appointment date and demonstrate potential for excellence in research, publications, innovation, and securing external funding.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Nanoengineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Bioengineering, or a closely related discipline by the time of appointment.
  • Potential for excellence in scholarship through impactful research.
  • A strong record of peer-reviewed publications.
  • Demonstrated innovation in research.
  • Evidence of strong potential for attracting external research support appropriate to career stage.
  • Advanced to candidacy or earned Ph.D. degree in engineering (e.g., Chemical Engineering) or related fields at the time of application.

Responsibilities

  • Establish a nationally and internationally recognized research program.
  • Develop innovative and externally funded research in nanosensing, wearable technologies, diagnostics, and healthcare applications.
  • Conduct research that may span fundamental science, engineering, device development, and translation toward real-world healthcare applications.
  • Contribute to the Department's educational mission through effective teaching and mentoring at undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Teach core and elective courses in Chemical Engineering and/or Nanoengineering, and develop new courses related to expertise.
  • Contribute to curriculum development, educational assessment, accreditation activities, student mentoring and advising.
  • Engage in departmental, school, university, and professional service.
