About The Position

The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Philosophy, with a specialization in Social and Political Philosophy, beginning August 2027. This is a full-time position with responsibilities for teaching undergraduate courses in Philosophy and the capstone course in the General Education program, research, and service to the university and community. The teaching load for this position is 4/4 (24 credits annually), with an emphasis on high-impact instructional practices, student success, research, and professional service. The successful candidate will be expected to teach World of Ideas (the General Education capstone course), at least one course in the History of Philosophy, and other courses in philosophy aligned with their specialization. They will also contribute to the Liberal Studies program and advise its majors. The department administers the Philosophy minor, World Religions minor, and Liberal Studies major and minor, with six full-time faculty/academic staff and an Academic Department Associate. The College of Letters and Sciences provides a liberal education foundation in humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences.

Requirements

PhD in Philosophy by the time of appointment.
Specialization in Social and Political Philosophy (AOS).
ABD candidates may apply but must have their degree completed by the contract start date in August 2027.
Ability to interact respectfully with people with diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills.

Responsibilities

Teach undergraduate courses in Philosophy, including the capstone course in the General Education program.
Conduct research and maintain an active scholarly agenda in Philosophy.
Provide service to the university and community.
Teach World of Ideas, the capstone course in the General Education program.
Teach at least one course in the History of Philosophy.
Teach other courses in philosophy based on specialization and competence.
Contribute to the Liberal Studies program.
Advise Liberal Studies majors.
Deliver 24 credits of instruction per academic year.
Maintain at least five office hours for students each week during the academic year.
Use Navigate for all advising/mentoring notes.
Maintain professional and timely responsiveness to inquiries.
Ensure punctual submission of course syllabi.
Contribute to curriculum development.
Select and develop instructional materials that are Title II (ADA) compliant.
Disseminate research through peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, or professional exhibitions.
Participate in departmental, college, and university-level meetings and committee work.
Participate in professional and public service.
Contribute to program assessment and development.
Engage in professional outreach and service that aligns with the University Mission Statement and the Wisconsin Idea.
Participate in at least one graduation ceremony each academic year.
