About The Position

The Civil & Environmental Engineering Department in the College of Engineering at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California (Cal Poly) is inviting applications for a full-time, academic year, tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor rank beginning Fall 2027. Cal Poly emphasizes a 'Learn by Doing' philosophy, focusing on preparing graduates for immediate impact. The university is committed to the teacher-scholar model, expecting faculty to excel in teaching, remain current in their fields, engage in high-quality scholarly work, and contribute to university service. The successful candidate will have a strong interest in teaching and curriculum development in Structural Engineering and Design. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses and laboratories, supervising research, developing externally-funded research, and engaging in university service such as student advising and curriculum development. The College of Engineering is dedicated to fostering a multi-disciplinary, hands-on approach to inclusive excellence in student learning and applied research, encouraging collaboration among faculty from diverse backgrounds. The Civil & Environmental Engineering Department offers ABET-accredited B.S. programs in Civil and Environmental Engineering and an M.S. degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Requirements

  • An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in civil, structural, architectural engineering, or a closely related field from an accredited institution or international equivalent.
  • Candidates nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) will be considered but must provide proof that the doctorate was awarded prior to or by the start of the appointment.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching, effective communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, staff and faculty.
  • Ability to develop an externally funded, applied research program that involves undergraduate and graduate students, and partnerships with key stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to hands-on, student-centered learning and teaching.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaboratively work in multidisciplinary settings.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong interests in undergraduate and graduate teaching.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral use of the English language.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching undergraduate lecture courses and laboratories in civil engineering and structural engineering and design.
  • Teaching graduate courses and laboratories in structural engineering, design, and in their area of expertise.
  • Supervising undergraduate and graduate-level research.
  • Developing and maintaining externally-funded research.
  • Engaging in activities related to service in the form of student advising, curriculum development, and shared governance.
