About The Position

California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) is seeking to hire a tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in Counseling or Clinical Psychology for Fall 2027. This role is crucial for the development and leadership of the new Master's degree program in Clinical Counseling Psychology, launched in Fall 2026, which prepares students for licensure as a professional clinical counselor (LPCC). The successful candidate will contribute to curriculum development, clinic support, and community partnerships. Faculty are expected to participate in year-round program operations, including potential summer teaching and Master's project evaluation. The department follows a teacher-scholar model with a 3-3 teaching load, emphasizing empirical science, communication, research methods, and critical analysis. Multicultural perspectives and ethical issues are integrated into the curriculum. The position offers opportunities for collaboration with undergraduate and graduate students, focusing on high-quality teaching and student-engaged scholarship.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, or a closely related field prior to date of appointment (ABD applicants accepted; PhD conferral required by hire date).
  • Applicants whose degree is in a related field should explain how their doctoral training prepares them to contribute to a psychology-based clinical counseling program and meet the responsibilities of the position.
  • Demonstrated evidence of teaching excellence at the university level (e.g., student evaluations/summaries, peer observation summaries).
  • Demonstrate preparation to teach graduate courses and evaluate Master’s projects in the M.S. in Clinical Counseling Psychology program that support students’ preparation for LPCC licensure.
  • Demonstrate an active, sustainable research program with opportunities for student involvement.
  • Ability to supervise Master’s theses in the M.A. program.

Responsibilities

  • Play a meaningful role in the continued development and long-term leadership of the M.S. in Clinical Counseling Psychology program.
  • Shape the curriculum of the M.S. in Clinical Counseling Psychology program.
  • Support clinic development for the M.S. in Clinical Counseling Psychology program.
  • Build relationships with community partners.
  • Participate in a rotating schedule of program-related responsibilities, such as summer teaching and evaluation of Master’s projects.
  • Teach graduate courses and evaluate Master’s projects in the M.S. in Clinical Counseling Psychology program that support students’ preparation for LPCC licensure.
  • Supervise Master’s theses in the M.A. program.
  • Engage in teaching, research, and service within the department and campus community.
