About The Position

California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) is seeking an Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education. This position is effective August 17, 2027, for the Fall Semester. The salary range is $6,221 to $13,224 per month, with an anticipated hiring range of $7,330 to $8,000 per month. CSULB is a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI) with a strong commitment to student success, diversity, and inclusion. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is looking for faculty with interests in K-8 mathematics teacher preparation, K-16 statistics or data science education, and programmatic changes in response to educational initiatives. The role involves teaching and developing undergraduate and graduate courses, advising students, maintaining scholarly activity, seeking grant funds, and participating in service activities.

Requirements

Ph.D. or Ed.D. in mathematics education; statistics or data science education; or related field (e.g., mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics) with background in education research.
Degree at time of application or official notification of completion of the doctoral degree by August 1, 2027.
Demonstrated potential for teaching effectiveness and excellence in higher education that reflects an understanding of the impacts of race, ethnicity, and other identities on the lives and experiences of students.
Demonstrated potential for published scholarship in mathematics education.
Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population, including low socioeconomic and first-generation students.

Nice To Haves

Master’s degree in mathematics or statistics or other relevant mathematics or statistics experience in addition to an earned doctorate degree(s).
Experience successfully working with populations demographically and/or socioeconomically similar to the CSULB student body (e.g. experience teaching and mentoring students from underrepresented groups, understanding of culturally responsive pedagogy, pedagogical content knowledge related to the needs of students from underrepresented groups).
Experience mentoring or supporting students using inclusive and culturally relevant teaching strategies in a diverse classroom and a record of effectiveness and excellence in teaching in higher education that reflects an understanding of the impacts of race, ethnicity, and other identities on the lives and experiences of students.
Potential to teach and engage in research within any subdiscipline(s) of mathematics education, especially in ways that complement the expertise of the current faculty.
Potential for partnering with diverse urban K-12 school districts and/or other diverse educational contexts on grants and professional development activities.
Potential for obtaining external funding for mathematics education projects.
Experience in scholarly communication in mathematics education (e.g., mathematics education conference presentations and publications).
Potential for supervising students’ mathematics education research projects.
A record of contribution to service (e.g., committee work, engagement with efforts to include equity and inclusion) within the university or a relevant disciplinary context (e.g., education, mathematics education).

Responsibilities

Teach and develop equitable undergraduate mathematics courses for future mathematics educators (including Mathematics Education majors and Liberal Studies majors) and other students in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
Teach and develop graduate courses for educators enrolled in the Master of Science in Mathematics for Educators.
Contribute to departmental, university, and CSU efforts to develop, credential, and support K-12 diverse mathematics teachers.
Advise undergraduate and/or graduate students (e.g., academic advising, scholarly projects).
May supervise student teachers.
Support department and university initiatives to improve graduation and passing rates, including developing and improving curriculum.
Maintain and engage in impactful mathematics education creative and scholarly activity (e.g., publications, presentations) that support research opportunities for our undergraduate and graduate students.
Seek grant funds to support both mathematics education research and professional development of in-service preK-12 mathematics teachers and/or CSULB faculty.
Participate in service at all levels of the university and in the greater mathematics education community.
