Assistant Professor of Health Disparities/Health Psychology
About The Position
California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) is seeking to hire an Assistant Professor of Health Disparities/Health Psychology in the College of Liberal Arts, Department of Psychology. This position is effective August 17, 2027, for the Fall Semester. CSULB is a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI) committed to serving diverse students and promoting inclusive excellence. The university's Beach 2030 University Action Plans prioritize engaging all students, expanding access to higher education, promoting intellectual achievement, building community, and cultivating resilience. The department is looking for a candidate who can teach undergraduate and graduate courses, develop and maintain an active research program in Health Disparities/Health Psychology, and mentor students effectively, with a strong commitment to working with a diverse student population.
Requirements
- Ph.D. in Health Psychology or closely related field in Health Disparities.
- Degree at time of application or official notification of completion of the doctoral degree by August 1, 2027.
- Ability to teach a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in Health Disparities/Health Psychology and other psychology courses
- Demonstrated potential for effective teaching and mentoring at the college level
- Demonstrated potential for developing and maintaining an active program of research in the area of Health Disparities/Health Psychology
- Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population, including Black/African American, Latine/x, Native American/Indigenous, low-income, first-generation, and minoritized students

- Research emphasis on health disparities in disease prevention, intervention, or basic science to promote health equity and improve health status among racial, ethnic, sexual minority, low-income, immigrant, and/or other underserved populations
- Expertise in utilizing an interdisciplinary approach to reducing health disparities from a biopsychosocial perspective that includes various determinants of health, such as health-related biomarkers and outcomes (e.g., immune functioning, risk for disease), relevant psychological processes (e.g., stress, resilience), and sociocultural and environmental factors (e.g., discrimination, socioeconomic status, physical environment)
- Ability to establish and maintain research ties to underserved communities
- Scholarly approach that fosters collaboration with other health psychology faculty in the department and the university
- Experience in, or potential for, generating external grant funding
- Demonstrated experience of successfully working effectively with diverse student populations demographically and/or socioeconomically similar to the CSULB student body
- Excellence in teaching and mentoring, with a demonstrated ability to involve undergraduate and graduate students in faculty-directed research and/or mentor undergraduate and graduate students in independent research
- Experience mentoring or supporting students with minoritized identities or experience using inclusive and culturally relevant teaching strategies in a diverse classroom
- Experience in or demonstrated commitment to service at the department, university, community, or professional level
Responsibilities
- Teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in psychology, including courses in Health Disparities/Health Psychology. (Mode of instruction may include in-person, hybrid, online, and/or any combination thereof.)
- Establish an independent research program, maintain an active research lab, and engage in research, scholarly and creative activities in the area of Health Disparities/Health Psychology leading to publications
- Supervise students in research activities including undergraduate projects and Masters’ theses
- Participate in service to the department, college, university, and community
