About The Position

The English Department in the College of Liberal Arts at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, California, seeks applications for a full-time, academic-year, tenure-track Assistant Professor of English (Linguistics) to begin approximately August 12, 2027. The ideal candidate should have a Ph.D. in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, or related field by the start of the appointment. We are particularly interested in a colleague specializing in sociolinguistics and/or phonology, with secondary expertise in one or more of the following areas: sociophonetics; second language phonology, phonetics, or speech learning; morphology; second language acquisition; and corpus linguistics. This position offers an opportunity to help shape the existing Linguistics and TESOL curriculum. Candidates able to develop and teach graduate seminars in linguistics, an introductory computational linguistics course for liberal arts students, or both are especially encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will demonstrate a willingness to implement and/or reimagine existing programs in linguistics, such as the English Department’s current TESOL certificate and Linguistics minor, including establishing and overseeing student internships, teaching upper-division and lower-division linguistics courses, and developing curriculum for General Education and other English Department offerings. For this position, we seek leadership, creativity, and an eagerness to engage in cross-disciplinary collaborations across multiple colleges with academic programs and/or research in user experience and design, world languages, teacher education, and STEM education. We particularly welcome applicants who demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusivity in program design and evaluating and assessing language competence.
