About The Position

The Department of Computer Science at San José State University is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in bioinformatics or a related field, starting August 2027. This role involves teaching a range of courses in Computer Science, Data Science, and the MS in Bioinformatics program. The department offers various undergraduate and graduate degrees and values collaboration with Silicon Valley. Requirements

• Ph.D. in Computer Science or a closely related field.
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching and scholarship.
• Awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population, as evidenced by cross-cultural study, training, teaching, or comparable experience.

Nice To Haves

• Teaching, research, and/or industry experience in bioinformatics or a related field, such as computational biology, genomics, biomedical data science, or machine learning and AI applied to biological data.

Responsibilities

• Teach in-person courses in Computer Science and Data Science, as well as courses in the MS in Bioinformatics program.
• Supervise and advise students in both undergraduate and graduate programs.
• Establish a successful research program related to their field of interest.
• Participate in shared governance, including department, college, and university committees and other service assignments.
• Organize all classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
• Demonstrate awareness and experience in understanding the needs of a diverse student population through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.
• Comply with mandated reporter requirements under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act.
• Complete Clery Act training and report Clery incidents if designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA).
• Complete assigned CSU employee training (e.g., Data Security, FERPA, Preventing Discrimination and Harassment, Title IX, Health and Safety).
• Comply with safety measures as recommended or required by the President to decrease the likelihood of COVID-19 transmission.
