About The Position

The Computer Science and Software Engineering Department in the College of Engineering at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) is seeking a full-time, academic year, tenure-track faculty member at the Assistant Professor rank, beginning Fall 2027. Cal Poly emphasizes a 'Learn by Doing' philosophy, preparing graduates for immediate impact. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and master's level courses, contribute to curriculum development, and conduct externally funded research involving students and stakeholders. Requirements

  • An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a closely related field from an accredited institution or international equivalent (or ABD with doctorate awarded by start of appointment).
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, staff, and faculty.
  • Ability to develop an externally funded, applied research program that involves undergraduate and graduate students, and partnerships with key stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to hands-on, student-centered learning and teaching.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaboratively work in multidisciplinary settings.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong interests in undergraduate and graduate teaching.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral use of the English language.
  • Compliance with the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act as a mandated reporter.
  • Satisfactory completion of a background check.

  • Demonstrated excellence in university-level teaching and research (commensurate with time since degree).
  • Experience with laboratory-based instruction.

  • Ability to teach courses in areas of need: operating systems, software engineering, high-performance computing, distributed computing, and full-stack mobile and web development.
  • Ability to teach courses in additional areas of emphasis: privacy and security, artificial intelligence, game development, and data science.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate and master's level courses in computer science and/or software engineering.
