About The Position

This position is a clinical faculty appointment in the Department of Hematopathology within the Division of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. The primary function is to assume diagnostic patient care responsibilities by serving as a diagnostic hematopathologist. The role requires a self-motivated, energetic, committed, and conscientious professional with strong communication skills. The individual will be responsible for visually reviewing and interpreting medical records, patient data, and specimens, including identifying specimen components through a microscope and integrating this information into diagnostic findings. Familiarity with staging reactions on slides, immunocytochemistry, flow cytometry, histograms, and image analysis systems is necessary. The role also involves comprehending printed results, correlating patient data with research findings, ensuring Quality Control standards are met, and complying with CAP, JCAHO, FDA, Medicare, and CLIA regulations. Problem-solving related to job responsibilities, working with hazardous materials, and familiarity with tissue culture procedures, molecular biologic techniques, and sophisticated equipment are also key. Manual dexterity for instrument use and the ability to move between laboratories are required. Administrative duties include ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, providing theoretical guidance and technical assistance to laboratory personnel, interviewing applicants, evaluating personnel performance, and making recommendations for hiring, termination, promotion, and merit. Maintaining up-to-date knowledge in Hematopathology and Laboratory Medicine, and consulting on bone marrow and lymph node specimens are essential. In research and development, commitment to clinical and applied aspects of hematopathology, collaboration with investigators, and the ability to design, execute, interpret, and integrate scientific data for publication are expected. Educational responsibilities include presenting lectures and training fellows, post-doctoral fellows, medical students, technologists, medical technology students, and laboratory personnel.

Requirements

Doctorate-level degree in a field appropriate to faculty role and department mission.
Licensed to practice in Texas.
Board Certified or obtain within the department’s timeline.
At least 2 years’ experience as Instructor or at least 5 years’ experience post degree with any combination of time as a clinician, clinical scientist or GME trainee.
Appropriate post medical doctoral training per discipline.

Responsibilities

Assume diagnostic patient care responsibilities in the Department of Hematopathology.
Serve as a diagnostic hematopathologist.
Visually review, evaluate, and correctly interpret medical records, patient data, patient specimens, and other test results.
Visually identify specimen make-up, contents, and/or components viewed through a microscope and integrate this information into diagnostic and biologically relevant information.
Visually read staging reactions on slides, and be familiar with immunocytochemistry, flow cytometry, histograms, and image analysis systems.
Comprehend relevance of printed results and correlate patient data with research findings.
Ensure that Quality Control standards are implemented and that the laboratory complies with CAP, JCAHO, FDA, Medicare, and CLIA regulations for accreditation.
Relate quality control result data to unknown analyzed data assuring that appropriate action is taken based on results obtained.
Identify and solve problems related to job responsibilities utilizing knowledge and experience.
Work with radioisotopes, chemical carcinogens, organic compounds, and biohazardous materials exercising appropriate cautions.
Be acquainted with tissue culture procedures, molecular biologic techniques, and sophisticated equipment.
Utilize manual dexterity for various functions with instruments used in diagnosis and research.
Move from one laboratory to another.
Assure compliance with standards of CAP, JCAHO, FDA, Medicare, and CLIA.
Give theoretical guidance and technical assistance to laboratory personnel.
Interview applicants, evaluate laboratory personnel on their job performance, and make hiring, termination, promotional and merit recommendations.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge in the field of Hematopathology and Laboratory Medicine in general.
Interpretation, reporting and consulting of bone marrow and lymph node specimens of hematological malignancies.
Show commitment to the clinical and applied aspects of hematopathology.
Collaborate with other investigators at MDACC and outside this institution.
Design, execute, interpret, and integrate scientific data for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
Present lectures using visual aids to faculty, fellows, and technical personnel.
Train fellows, post-doctoral fellows, medical students, technologists, medical technology students and laboratory personnel.
