About The Position

The Assistant Professor, Clinical Faculty Appointment in Rheumatology provides clinical expertise in patient care management and creates a teaching environment for fellows, residents, and students. This role involves direct patient care, including new patient evaluations, initiating referrals, and follow-up. The position also requires participation in developing clinical research studies and performing clinical procedures pertinent to standard patient care. The Assistant Professor is expected to be a role model for faculty, fellows, residents, and students, and to participate in peer review.

Requirements

Must have completed the M.D. degree or equivalent from an accredited medical school.
Must be licensed as a physician in the State of Texas.
Must have completed residency training in an approved American Residency Program or equivalent.
Must have made an application and been accepted by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Must have completed fellowship training in an approved American Rheumatology Fellowship Program or equivalent.
Must be board certified in Internal Medicine.
Must be board certified (or eligible) in the subspecialty of Rheumatology (or foreign equivalent) or obtain board certification within 3 years of employment.
Fully ambulatory.
Excellent bilateral manual dexterity.
Good hand-eye coordination.
Visual and auditory acuity to perform job functions.
Intelligent with outstanding analytical skills.
Emotional and psychological stability.
Ability to synthesize a myriad of information pertaining to research.
Ability to instruct research support personnel in protocol implementation.
Ability to complete grant application forms.
Ability to develop and analyze budgets.
Ability to provide complete and thorough history and physical patient examinations.
Ability to perform invasive procedures as dictated by the physician's specialty.
Ability to document clearly and concisely.
Ability to work within a context of very intense interpersonal relationships including other physicians, staff, patients, and subordinates.

Nice To Haves

At least 2 years of experience as an Instructor; or 5 years of experience post-degree with any combination of time as a clinician, clinical scientist, or GME trainee.

Responsibilities

Provides clinical expertise in patient care management in Rheumatology.
Provides an appropriate teaching environment for fellows, residents, and students.
Participates in developing clinical research studies.
Independently responsible for new patient evaluations, initiation of appropriate referrals, and follow-up.
Performs clinical procedures pertinent to delivering standard care to the patient.
Provides a balanced and integrated educational program in internal medicine for medical residents and students.
Attends and participates in Division/Department teaching and continuing education conferences.
Provides talks to interdisciplinary teams, patients, and caregivers on rheumatology topics.
Actively engages in clinical research and scholarly activity.
Develops programs of clinical research and scholarly activities.
Seeks appropriate funding mechanisms to support clinical research.
Represents the Department of General Internal Medicine at local, regional, state, and national levels regarding Rheumatology.
Practices clinical medicine in an exemplary manner according to standards set forth by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners and the American College of Physicians.
Provides complete and thorough history and physical patient examinations.
Performs invasive procedures as dictated by the physician's specialty.
Develops and maintains a clinical practice for patients referred to MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Provides physician staffing for the Department of General Internal Medicine.
Visually reviews for proper ICD-10 and CPT coding and approves all charge documents.
Completes patient documentation for medical records within time frames provided by institutional policy.
Corresponds with physicians regarding patient care and treatment.
Keeps abreast of current approaches in the management of patients through attendance at continuing education conferences.
Requests appropriate consultations for patients.
Committed to expanding MD Anderson’s rheumatology footprint to best meet the needs of older adults across the institution.
Willingness to take on a leadership role in the development of the rheumatology service, including leading quality improvement initiatives, program evaluation, and training of additional staff.
Serves as a role model as a practitioner for faculty, fellows, residents, and students.
Provides peer review for assessing the clinical practice of faculty within the Department.
Complies with all policies and procedures.
