About The Position

The primary function of this role is to assume diagnostic patient care responsibilities in the Department of Hematopathology within the Division of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, serving as a diagnostic hematopathologist. The candidate will also be responsible for developing a research program.

Requirements

Doctorate-level degree in a field appropriate to faculty role and department mission.
Licensed to practice in Texas.
Board Certified or obtain within the department’s timeline.
At least 2 years’ experience as Instructor or at least 5 years’ experience post degree with any combination of time as a clinician, clinical scientist or GME trainee.
Must be a self-motivated, highly energetic, committed, and conscientious professional who communicates (verbal and written) and relates well to others at the professional, technical, and administrative levels.

Preferably develop and maintain an independent research program.
Preferably seek government and/or private agency support from his/her independent research.

Responsibilities

Serve as a diagnostic hematopathologist, assuming diagnostic patient care responsibilities.
Develop a research program.
Visually review, evaluate, and correctly interpret medical records, patient data, patient specimens, and other test results.
Visually identify specimen make-up, contents, and/or components viewed through a microscope and integrate this information into diagnostic and biologically relevant information.
Visually read staging reactions on slides, and be familiar with immunocytochemistry, flow cytometry, histograms, and image analysis systems.
Comprehend the relevance of printed results and correlate patient data with research findings.
Ensure that Quality Control standards are implemented and that the laboratory complies with CAP, JCAHO, FDA, Medicare, and CLIA regulations for accreditation.
Relate quality control result data to unknown analyzed data, assuring that appropriate action is taken based on results obtained.
Identify and solve problems related to job responsibilities utilizing knowledge and experience.
Work with radioisotopes, chemical carcinogens, organic compounds, and biohazardous materials exercising appropriate cautions.
Be acquainted with tissue culture procedures, molecular biologic techniques, and sophisticated equipment.
Perform various functions with instruments used in diagnosis and research, requiring manual dexterity.
Move from one laboratory to another.
Give theoretical guidance and technical assistance to laboratory personnel.
Interview applicants, evaluate laboratory personnel on their job performance, and make hiring, termination, promotional, and merit recommendations.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge in the field of Hematopathology and Laboratory Medicine in general.
Interpret, report, and consult on bone marrow and lymph node specimens of hematological malignancies.
Show commitment to the clinical, applied, and/or investigational aspects of hematopathology.
Collaborate with other investigators at MDACC and outside this institution.
Design, execute, interpret, and integrate scientific data for publication in peer-reviewed journals and grant applications.
Present lectures using visual aids to faculty, fellows, and technical personnel.
Train fellows, post-doctoral fellows, medical students, technologists, medical technology students, and laboratory personnel.
