About The Position

The Assistant Principal of Middle School supports the Principal in advancing the school’s mission, driving academic excellence, and ensuring operational effectiveness. This role provides instructional leadership, oversees school culture and student achievement, supervises and develops staff, and ensures compliance with District of Columbia Public Charter School Board (DC PCSB) standards and accountability requirements. The Assistant Principal plays a critical role in fostering a safe, inclusive, achievement-oriented learning environment that supports all students and advances the school’s strategic and academic goals.

Requirements

  • MA or MS in education, educational leadership, or related field.
  • 3+ years of successful K-12 teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising and coaching adults.
  • Knowledge of curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices.
  • Experience analyzing student achievement and/or school performance data.
  • Experience supporting student discipline and school culture systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience leading professional development.
  • Ability to pass the required background clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • 2+ years of site-based leadership experience (e.g., Dean, Instructional Coach, Department Chair, Grade-Level, Lead).
  • Experience conducting formal teacher observation and evaluation.
  • Experience managing schoolwide initiatives (MTSS, PBIS, data cycles, accreditation, etc.).
  • Experience overseeing compliance areas (e.g., Special Education, ELL, testing, attendance, safety).
  • Experience with restorative practices and student support systems.
  • Experience managing master scheduling or school operations.
  • Experience in budget oversight or resource allocation
  • 5+ years of experience in education.
  • Demonstrated success in improving student achievement outcomes.
  • Experience in a similar school model.
  • Valid Administrative Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Instructional Leadership & Student Achievement Support implementation of rigorous, standards-aligned curriculum (Common Core & DC standards).
  • Conduct frequent classroom observations and provide actionable, growth-oriented feedback.
  • Lead data-driven instructional improvement cycles and monitor intervention effectiveness.
  • Analyze student achievement data to inform instructional strategy and resource allocation.
  • Support implementation of MTSS, academic interventions, and progress monitoring systems.
  • Collaborate on school-wide assessments and accountability measures.
  • Participate in curriculum reflection and refinement aligned to annual school goals.
  • Support the evolution of signature academic programs (e.g., Senior Thesis program).
  • Promote a safe, equitable, and restorative school culture.
  • Oversee the Implementation and monitoring of behavior systems and restorative practices.
  • Oversee the management of student discipline processes in accordance with school policy and DC regulations.
  • Oversee the coordination of attendance improvement strategies and monitor chronic absenteeism.
  • Facilitate family meetings and conflict resolution conversations.
  • Partner with families to support student success and academic growth.
  • Represent the school at community and recruitment events as needed.
  • Supervise, evaluate, and coach teachers, instructional coaches, and school deans.
  • Conduct formal teacher observations and evaluations.
  • Provide targeted coaching to new and developing educators.
  • Lead professional development aligned to instructional priorities.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and retention of high-performing staff.
  • Ensure accountability and follow-through on staff performance expectations.
  • Ensure compliance with DC PCSB requirements, reporting expectations, and accountability standards.
  • Support oversight of key compliance areas (e.g., Special Education, ELL, testing, attendance, safety).
  • Assist with crisis management and emergency preparedness planning.
  • Collaborate on master scheduling and operational planning.
  • Support budgeting and responsible resource allocation.
  • Contribute to enrollment and reenrollment efforts.
