About The Position

The City of Deltona is seeking an experienced and strategic Assistant Parks & Recreation Director to help lead the planning, development, and delivery of high-quality parks, recreation programs, and community services. This role is ideal for a leader who can balance operations, programming, and long-term planning, while driving community engagement and ensuring efficient, high-performing services across parks, facilities, and recreational programs. The purpose of this job/class within the organization is to manage and provide cultural, recreational, educational and promotional activities to the residents and user groups in the City. This job/class works under administrative supervision, developing and implementing programs within organizational policies and reports major activities to executive level administrators through conferences and reports.

Requirements

  • Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Recreation, Public Administration or closely related field.
  • Requires four years' experience in recreation, events management, facility maintenance management or closely related field.
  • Requires a driver's license valid in the State of Florida.

Responsibilities

  • Directs activities of employees engaged in the maintenance and repair of City facilities to determine maintenance, repair and housekeeping requirements, and capital improvements.
  • Evaluates the community's needs for recreational and leisure activities.
  • Develops and directs multiple projects simultaneously for production and facilities maintenance systems including alterations and new installations, utilization improvements, safety and environmental.
  • Directs department resources by establishing department policies and improving the efficiencies of department operations and programs.
  • Plans, prepares, implements, and administers department budgets; monitors and ensures adherences to established operating expenditures parameters.
  • Plans, coordinates, and directs a diversified, year-round parks and recreation program including the management of various fields, parks, facilities and open spaces.
  • Evaluates facility needs and recommends staffing levels, materials, and equipment and capital improvements for City facilities.
  • Manages the development, planning, implementation and organization of recreational programs through activity staff, instructors, contracted personnel, and volunteers.
  • Acts as liaison with all youth sports leagues.
  • Manages scheduling of facilities and evaluation of programs.
  • Keeps appointment calendar and schedules appointments.
  • Maintains contact with community groups by involving them in activity planning.
  • Recommend new or revised activities through studies and reports.
  • Ensures a safe, compliant, and healthy workplace for all employees through technical support and direction.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of marketing efforts to increase public awareness of and participation in programs; creates publicity materials and gives public presentations as required.
  • Oversee the work of the Recreation Programs Supervisor, the Parks Maintenance Supervisor, and the Turf Maintenance Supervisor and others as assigned or directed.
  • Supervises or leads others by determining work procedures, assigning duties, maintaining harmonious relations, and promoting efficiency.
  • Requires responsibility and opportunity for achieving moderate economies and/or preventing moderate losses through the management of a small division; handles supplies of high value or moderate amounts of money consistent with the operation of a small division.
  • Decision-making is a major part of the job, affecting a major segment of the organization and the general public; works in a dynamic environment; responsible for developing policies and practices.
