About The Position

The McGill University Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Nephrology in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is inviting applications for a full-time Contract Academic Staff position as a clinician-scientist at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (Clinical). The professorial rank will be determined according to the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience. This will be a Contract Academic Staff position and does not confer eligibility for tenure. The Department of Pediatrics is a leader in academic medicine. Our educational and research missions support excellent and innovative clinical programs across our teaching hospitals. The Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH) of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) is one of McGill’s major teaching hospitals affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec. All pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties are represented at the MCH. The Division of Pediatric Nephrology is clinically and academically composed of an outstanding group of six nephrologists, with an externally-funded fundamental and clinical research portfolio, and expertise in quality improvement, patient safety, and in transition of patients from pediatric to adult care. Strongly committed to multi-disciplinary care, the Division provides both outpatient and inpatient consultation to all areas of the hospital, offers the full range of nephrology services including dialysis and transplantation, and supports comprehensive extracorporeal therapies. The Division has an active, fully accredited Royal College Pediatric Nephrology Residency program, training 15 nephrology residents and fellows over the past decade. Members of the division are involved in diverse scholarly activities at the hospital and the University as well as nationally and internationally.

Requirements

  • Hold an MD degree (or equivalent), and must hold or be eligible for licensure to practice medicine in the province of Quebec
  • Have postgraduate clinical training in pediatrics, and have completed specialty training in Pediatric Nephrology with certification by the Collège des médecins du Québec or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent)
  • Have completed at least two years of research training in addition to their clinical training

Nice To Haves

  • A postgraduate degree (e.g., MSc or PhD) will be considered an asset
  • Demonstrated success at obtaining research grants will also be considered an asset
  • Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the language skills necessary to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families, and health care professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Involved in the academic activities of the McGill University Department of Pediatrics, Division of Nephrology located at the Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH), McGill University Health Centre (MUHC).
  • Share equally in on call duties.
  • Cover the inpatient/dialysis service 6-8 weeks per year
  • Cover the transplant service 6-8 weeks per year (including one half-day clinic)
  • Hold a minimum of one half-day out-patient clinic every two weeks.
  • Participate in all clinical and administrative division meetings.
  • Clinician-scientists are expected to commit 50%-75% of their time to research.
  • Supervision of undergraduate and graduate trainees and participation in the pediatric nephrology subspecialty training program is also expected.
  • Supporting the education and professional development of nurses and nurse practitioners.
  • Apply for salary support from the FRQS and to eventually obtain external operating grants for their research.
  • Actively involved in relevant aspects of McGill’s academic mission (e.g., research, teaching, supervision of students and residents, and involvement in academic and administrative committees).
  • Contribute to service activities within their units, the University, and the wider scholarly community.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion is also expected.
