About The Position

The McGill University Department of Pediatric Surgery, Division of Plastic Surgery in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences invites applicants for a full-time position as a member of the Contract Academic Staff at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (Clinical). The professorial rank will be determined according to the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience. This will be a three-year, renewable appointment and does not confer eligibility for tenure. The McGill University Department of Pediatric Surgery is a leader in academic medicine. The Montreal Children’s Hospital of the McGill University Health Centre is one of McGill’s major teaching hospitals affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec. All pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties are represented at the MCH. The successful candidate will be appointed to clinical practice at the Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH) of the McGill University Health Centre. The Division of Plastic Surgery strives to provide state-of-the-art surgical care to our patients, combined with cutting edge research and innovation that continues to keep McGill Plastic Surgery as a leader in the field. As a leader in surgical education, our residency training program attracts the finest trainees from across the country that participate in the complex, tertiary cases referred to our centre.We have a diverse faculty and provide Plastic Surgery expertise in all of the subspecialty areas including breast and oncologic reconstruction, burn surgery, pediatric and craniofacial surgery, hand and microsurgery, maxillofacial surgery and facial trauma, general plastic surgery and aesthetic surgery. Combined with a highly productive and dedicated, full-time research team and infrastructure, McGill Plastic Surgery oversees numerous MSc and PhD students annually and continues to produce a high volume of peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. Taken as a whole, McGill Plastic Surgery embodies the true nature of a high-level academic surgery program, encompassing innovative patient care, surgical education and training of future plastic surgeons and leading edge research.

Requirements

  • Hold an MD degree (or equivalent), and be eligible for, licensure in the Province of Quebec.
  • Be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent).
  • Have fellowship training in Pediatric Plastic Surgery.
  • For clinician-scientist applicants, a PhD or substantial post-graduate research experience in a relevant field is required.
  • Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec.
  • Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families, and health care professionals.
  • Must be authorized to work in Canada and willing to work in the province of Quebec.
  • Require English communication both verbally and in writing.

Nice To Haves

  • A further sub-specialty area of expertise and proficiency in facial reanimation/peripheral nerve and brachial plexus would be considered an asset.
  • An advanced research degree and the ability to perform independent research would be considered an asset and could allow the candidate to be recruited as a clinician scientist.
  • Candidates with a clinician-scientist profile will be expected to apply for external salary support from appropriate funding agencies (i.e., CIHR, FRQS), and to eventually obtain external operating grants for their research.
  • As a clinician-scientist, the candidate will be expected to devote at least 50% of their time to research.

  • Engage in a busy tertiary care academic and clinical practice.
  • Be familiar with the surgical management of all aspects of pediatric plastic surgery care.
  • Pursue scholarly activities in advancing clinical care or research.
  • Contribute to service activities within their units, the University, and the wider scholarly community.
