About The Position

The McGill University Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiac Surgery in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is inviting applications for a full-time Contract Academic Staff position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (Clinical). This position will be based at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) with a possible cross appointment at the Jewish General Hospital (JGH). The professorial rank will be determined according to the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience. This is a Contract Academic Staff position and does not confer eligibility for tenure. The Department of Surgery is a leader in academic medicine, with educational and research missions supporting excellent and innovative clinical programs across its teaching hospitals. The successful candidate will join the Division of Cardiac Surgery at the MUHC, which consists of five surgeons dedicated to providing high standards of Cardiac Surgery patient care, research, and education. The MUHC performs approximately 850 Adult Cardiac Surgical cases annually, with a strong emphasis on complex valvular surgery, Aortic surgery, Heart failure (ECMO, VAD and Transplant), and advanced surgical treatment of coronary disease. The Heart Team includes an active and diverse percutaneous valve program, and the division works closely and collaboratively with Cardiology, Vascular Surgery, and Critical Care. The Division is also active in Research (Aortic Biomechanics, Clinical Outcomes, and Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) and plays an important role in Surgical Education. Both the MUHC and the JGH are major teaching hospitals affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec.

Requirements

  • Hold a medical degree, and must hold or be eligible for, licensure in the province of Quebec
  • Have completed Cardiac Surgical training and be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent)
  • Have completed a 2-year Clinical Fellowship with at least one-year in advanced minimally invasive valvular surgery
  • Have additional graduate training (e.g., MSc, PhD) or expertise in surgical research
  • Be committed to, and demonstrate excellence in, clinical care, research, teaching, and innovation
  • Fellowship training and/or recognized experience in minimally invasive and/or robotic valvular procedures are essential
  • Bilingual language skills (French and English) or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills at the level needed to practice medicine in Quebec, enabling interaction in English and in French with patients, families, and health care professionals

  • Be involved in the academic activities of the McGill University Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiac Surgery
  • Demonstrate clinical expertise in the surgical management of valvular disease and technical expertise in minimally invasive approach including robotics
  • Focus academic career on surgical research and clinical outcomes
  • Engage in and develop an academic practice at the MUHC
  • Participate actively in all clinical activities in the Division of Cardiac Surgery
  • Develop a program of research related to minimally invasive cardiac surgery
  • Be actively involved in relevant aspects of McGill’s academic mission (e.g., research, teaching, supervision of students and residents and involvement in academic and administrative committees)
  • Contribute to service activities within their units, the University, and the wider scholarly community
