About The Position

The Assistant Band Director assists the Band Director in planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive high school instrumental music program. This position supports the instructional, performance, and operational aspects of the band program while fostering musical excellence, student engagement, and positive school culture. The Assistant Band Director collaborates with students, families, school staff, and community partners to provide meaningful musical experiences that promote artistic growth, leadership, teamwork, and personal responsibility.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 18 years of age
  • One (1) year of coaching experience, preferably in music, band or related field
  • CPR and First Aid Certification or ability to enroll and successfully complete a CPR and First Aid training course

  • Preferred 21 years of age
  • Current teacher or classified employee of Spotsylvania County Public Schools

Responsibilities

  • Assists in planning, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive performing arts program that supports student learning and artistic achievement.
  • Provides high-quality instruction to students through classroom, ensemble, sectional, and individual rehearsals as assigned.
  • Collaborates with the lead director to prepare students for performances, concerts, competitions, festivals, and other school and community events.
  • Promotes a positive, inclusive, and engaging learning environment that fosters creativity, teamwork, leadership, and personal growth.
  • Assists with organizing and supervising rehearsals, performances, travel, and extracurricular activities while ensuring student safety and well-being.
  • Supports the recruitment, retention, and development of students participating in the performing arts program.
  • Assists with the care, inventory, maintenance, and organization of instruments, equipment, uniforms, costumes, music, and other program resources.
  • Communicates effectively and collaborates with students, families, school staff, volunteers, booster organizations, and community partners to support program success.
  • Participates in professional learning, departmental collaboration, and school initiatives while complying with School Board policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.
