The Assistant Manager is responsible for everything that happens during their shift, including store operations, team performance, cost and inventory controls, cash handling, and customer relations. The role sets an example by following company policies and procedures and ensuring that crew members do the same. Assistant Managers support and develop their teams while helping drive store sales, customer service, and profitability. The position offers the opportunity to advance to general manager and potentially franchise ownership. The role includes operating store equipment; stocking ingredients and supplies; preparing products; receiving and processing telephone orders; taking inventory and completing paperwork; and cleaning the equipment and facility daily. It requires communicating with customers and coworkers, processing orders in person and by phone, and using a computer keyboard or touch screen. Working conditions include changing and sometimes adverse weather when performing outside tasks, temperatures ranging from 36 degrees in the cooler to 90 degrees or above in some work areas, food odors, cornmeal dust, cramped areas such as walk-in coolers, hot surfaces and tools, sharp edges, and moving mechanical parts. The position involves frequent standing, continuous hand use and reaching, and occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, bending, crouching, and squatting.
