About The Position

The Assistant Manager of Store Operations supervises and coordinates the activities of employees, ensuring that customer needs are met. This role is responsible for maintaining a positive attitude, creating an atmosphere of friendliness and fun through flexibility and teamwork, and encouraging employees to greet and speak to customers. The Assistant Manager provides prompt, efficient, and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern, and patience in all customer interactions. They are responsible for perpetuating the fundamental values of the Hy-Vee culture, which includes honesty, integrity, friendliness, and caring for customers and employees. This role oversees proper training, handles employee issues, and coordinates disciplinary procedures when necessary. Additionally, the Assistant Manager assists management in determining specific pricing and blends, determines the location of ad and promotional displays, and ensures product quality and quantities to meet customer and store demands and profitability. They ensure store standards for customer service, employee relations, and overall departmental profitability are met, and oversee building/ground maintenance and store sanitation and cleanliness. The Assistant Manager uses and understands all hardware and software technology in the store, assists in forecasting and reviewing the store labor schedule, and evaluates employee performance to recommend personnel actions. They train and enforce safety procedures, work safely to prevent injuries, and direct the ordering of merchandise. This role coordinates employee compliance with policies and laws, assists with replenishing shelf product, designs and constructs displays, and confers with employees to solve problems. The Assistant Manager adheres to company policies and individual store guidelines, reports to work when scheduled, and works the expected number of hours. Secondary duties include determining employee motivational needs, recruiting and interviewing applicants, staying current with market trends, providing continuous education for employees, recommending merchandise changes, pursuing retail educational opportunities, assisting in all areas of the store as needed, and working with department heads on various operational aspects. They also sell merchandise, handle cash registers, and perform other related duties.

Requirements

  • High School or equivalent experience.
  • One year or more of retail experience including performing the duties of an Assistant Manager.
  • Ability to solve practical problems with a variety of variables and limited standardization.
  • Ability to interpret instructions.
  • Ability to do arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
  • Ability to interview to obtain basic information.
  • Ability to guide people to provide basic direction.
  • Ability to follow technical manuals.
  • Increased contact with people.
  • Must be able to physically perform medium work: exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and 20 pounds of force frequently, and 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Visual requirements include vision from less than 20 inches to more than 20 feet with or without correction, depth perception, color vision, and field of vision.
  • Must be able to perform the following physical activities: Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
  • Must have daily contact with customers, employees, suppliers/vendors, and the general public.
  • Has access to confidential information, which may include pricing, sales reports, profit and loss reports, and wages.

  • Stays current with market trends and information (competition, new products, equipment, merchandising techniques).
  • Provides continuous education for existing store employees.
  • Recommends additions, deletions, and shelf allocation of merchandise.
  • Pursues retail educational opportunities and continuing education.
  • Assists in all areas of the store as needed.
  • Works with department heads regarding schedules, labor issues, product purchasing, and merchandising.
  • Sells merchandise to company employees, customers or issues merchandise upon requisition.
  • Handles cash registers.
  • Performs other job-related duties and special projects as required.
