About The Position

The Assistant Librarian supports library operations by providing customer service at service points; delivering reference, information, and reader’s advisory services to customers of all ages; assisting with literacy and lifelong-learning programs; and helping develop and maintain library collections. The role also assists customers in using library equipment and resources, keeps current on library information, trends, and technology, and completes assigned projects. Work is performed under the supervision of an assigned Librarian I, II, or III. The position may direct volunteers on assigned shifts or projects.

Requirements

Some college education.
One year of work experience in public library services, or an equivalent combination of training and customer service experience demonstrating the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Knowledge of basic library functions and procedures, library principles and trends, basic reference tools and philosophy, computer operations and information retrieval, collection development principles, and reader’s advisory tools.
Proficiency in operating equipment necessary to perform the job.
Excellent customer service skills and strong computer skills.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; plan and perform assignments with initiative and judgment under minimal supervision; respond appropriately under pressure; and work effectively in a team.
Positive, forward-thinking attitude and willingness to take calculated risks.
Some positions require bilingual abilities.

Responsibilities

Provide courteous, positive customer service at library service points and maintain customer and staff confidentiality.
Provide information, reference, and reader’s advisory services; answer questions about library policies, procedures, and records.
Assist in creating, promoting, and presenting library programs in the library and through outreach activities.
Coordinate with individuals and community organizations to plan and schedule special programs and services, as needed.
Maintain and report accurate records of programs and services provided.
Help evaluate, recommend, and select materials for library collections, and maintain collections through weeding and rotation.
Help customers use library equipment and resources, including computers, e-readers, the online catalog, automated reference tools, the Internet, databases, printers, scanners, and new technologies.
Keep informed of library information and changes through electronic and written communication and staff meetings.
Complete special projects in a timely manner and perform other related duties as assigned.
May coordinate and direct volunteers.
Keep current on library trends and technology.
