About The Position

The Assistant Fire Marshal represents the Fire Marshal in all their responsibilities and serves as a proxy in the absence of the Fire Marshal. The Assistant Fire Marshal is expected to have the certifications and skills inherent to those of the Fire Marshal. Responsibilities extend to all three residential campuses and all the facilities owned and/or leased by Utah State University in all 28 counties throughout the State of Utah.

Requirements

  • Two years of experience in fire prevention or a related field or an associate degree in a related field.
  • State of Utah Fire Marshal Fire Suppression Service Certificate of Registration
  • State of Utah Fire Marshal Sprinkler Level I
  • State of Utah Fire Marshal Master Fire Alarm Certification
  • ICC Fire Inspector I
  • ICC Fire Plans Examiner
  • Appropriate FEMA Certifications

Responsibilities

  • Perform assigned plan reviews on new construction and remodel projects.
  • Assist the Fire Marshal in reviewing plans and blueprints submitted for compliance to Fire and Building Codes adopted by the Utah State Fire Marshal’s Office and DFCM.
  • Assist the Fire Marshal in reviewing fire alarm drawings submitted for all projects.
  • Assist the Fire Marshal in reviewing fire sprinkler drawings submitted for all projects.
  • Perform the necessary code research required to perform a comprehensive response to submittals.
  • Draft written responses to the architects, USU Project Manager, Construction Project Manager, DFCM and Utah State Fire Marshal’s Office.
  • Attend assigned building design and construction meetings for new construction and remodels to ensure that the final product results in USU compliance with all state adopted fire, building, and life safety codes.
  • Provide code consultation when designs and/or plans change during the construction process.
  • Assist with scheduling and performing required construction inspections for new construction and remodels.
  • Assist with scheduling and performing required acceptance tests for fire alarm systems, fire sprinkler systems, commercial cooking hoods, etc., necessary to accept new construction and remodels on behalf of USU.
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge of fire building codes and applicable campus regulations.
  • Attend classes annually on fire and building codes to keep informed.
  • Review fire and building codes and related fire journals to assist in applying them to improve fire and life safety conditions on campus.
  • Complete all required training for NIMS compliance.
  • Maintain required certifications by attending regular continued education and periodic testing, including USU required yearly compliance training.
  • Assist the Fire Marshal with scheduling and supervising the work of the Deputy Fire Marshals.
  • Schedule fire extinguisher inspection, tagging and maintenance.
  • Schedule statewide campus inspections.
  • Schedule monthly on call.
  • Perform timely follow-up of Deputy Fire Marshals annual building inspection for thoroughness and accuracy.
  • Maintain the ability to perform duties required of the Deputy Fire Marshals when necessary.
  • Provide direct support to the Fire Marshal.
  • Complete special assignments on schedule.
  • Be flexible to take on other tasks as needed and assigned.
  • Assist with Fire and Life Safety Public Education training.
