About The Position

This position is for a Deputy Fire Marshal within the Flammable Liquids Division of the Nebraska State Fire Marshal. Essential qualities for success include initiative, integrity, responsibility, and the ability to work well with others. The role serves the Southwest inspection area of Nebraska, encompassing counties such as Lincoln, Dawson, Buffalo, Kearney, Hayes, Frontier Gosper, Phelps, Hitchcock, Red Willow, Furnas, Harlan, and Franklin. The successful candidate is required to reside in a community or county within this inspection area. Initial training will take place in Lincoln and various locations across the state alongside other deputies. Requirements

  • Experience in fire-fighting
  • Ability to lift 35 pounds
  • Ability to crouch
  • Ability to sit for considerable time periods
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required
  • A valid driver's license is required

  • Knowledge of flammable liquid storage and handling

Responsibilities

  • Inspect underground and above ground flammable liquid storage tanks for day-to-day compliance with codes and industry standards
  • Perform inspections for proper storage tank installation and removal
  • Investigate and determine source of releases from tanks
  • Write complete and accurate reports
  • Maintain electronic monitoring equipment
  • Interpret life safety codes
  • Respond to hazards created by releases from tanks
  • Conduct public presentations
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the classification
