About The Position

The main purpose of this position is the aggressive enforcement of State Laws in the field of fire and explosive investigation, enforcement of the State Fire Prevention Code and public fire safety education and prevention.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
  • None.
  • The above educational requirement is set by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Public Safety Article, Section 3-207, Annotated Code of Maryland.
  • Candidates must have attended an orientation for this classification in the same year as the recruitment announcement is posted.
  • Candidates must have successfully completed the functional fitness requirements for this classification conducted by the Maryland State Police.
  • Candidates must have successfully passed the written test for this classification administered by the Maryland State Police.
  • Employees in this classification who have not already done so must successfully complete the Entrance Level Police Training Course required by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission during the probationary period.
  • Employees in this classification will be required to secure Police Officer certification as required by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission during the probationary period.
  • Employees will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
  • Employees must meet the selection standards required and successfully complete the training prescribed by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission for a Police Officer in accordance with Public Safety Article, Section 6-303, Annotated Code of Maryland or be eligible for comparative compliance training, approved by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission. Selection standards for Police Officer training are listed in detail in the Code of Maryland Regulations 12.04.01.04 and include the following: U.S. Citizenship Must be at least 21 years of age A completed background investigation, including a check of criminal history Oral interview Physical examination Possession of a driver's license valid in the State of Maryland.
  • Employees in this classification will be required to bear firearms and to demonstrate practical knowledge and proficiency in the safe use and care of firearms on a periodic basis, as required by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission.
  • Employees in this classification are assigned duties in a given service area.
  • Employees in this classification are subject to call-in and, therefore, will be required to provide the employer with a phone number where they can be reached.
  • Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct fire investigations to determine the cause and origin of a fire.
  • Conduct fire safety inspections of commercial, institutional, industrial, educational, medical and storage facilities to assure compliance with the State Fire Prevention Code in the areas of: prevention of fires; storage, sale and use of combustible solid, liquids or gas form; installation and maintenance equipment for fire control, detection and extinguishment; means and adequacy of exit in case of fire from buildings and other places where people work, live, or congregate from time to time for any purpose, except those buildings used wholly as dwelling houses containing no more than two families.
  • Attend in-service training as well as various specialized schools, seminars, and workshops at local, state and national levels in order to develop the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for fire prevention, fire investigation and fire inspection.
  • Witness operational test of fire extinguishing systems, including automatic sprinkler systems and alarm systems.
  • Inspect proposed sites for fireworks displays and monitor the displays during the show.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
