About The Position

Under the administrative direction of the Director, Division of Safety & Compliance, this role manages the development and implementation of campus occupational safety and health programs and/or manages the delivery of occupational safety and health services. The position involves performing risk assessments, supervising staff, managing the fire extinguisher program, developing and implementing safety programs, assisting with incident reporting and investigations, and managing budgetary needs for occupational safety and health programs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, environmental engineering, environmental health, safety engineering, industrial hygiene, or a closely related field.
  • Two (2) years (24 months) of professional work experience in a safety or compliance related field.
  • Must be capable of wearing all required personal protective equipment including respiratory protection, eye/face protection, hearing protection, protective footwear, and protective clothing.
  • Must be able to climb ladders and stairs.
  • Must be able to work in mechanical/electrical rooms, fabrication shops, laboratories and farms.
  • Position involves lifting tools, toolboxes, technical equipment, equipment cases/containers, and packages for shipment weighing up to 25 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Perform risk assessments in various campus locations (research laboratories, academic laboratories, farms, industrial shops, construction sites, warehouses, dwellings, offices, etc.) to identify physical, chemical, ergonomic, psychological, and biological hazards.
  • Report risk assessment findings and corrective action options to relevant stakeholders including researchers, instructors, managers, department heads, and campus officers.
  • Provide ongoing support during the corrective actions phase, including re-evaluations, industrial hygiene monitoring, control measure selection, vendor liaison, engineering design consultation, standard operating procedure development, and training.
  • Supervise and/or direct others in program development and service delivery, reviewing subordinate work for accuracy, completeness, quality, and timeliness.
  • Create individual development plans, establish performance goals, and measure accomplishments of subordinates.
  • Identify, plan, and coordinate the work of contractors and consultants.
  • Manage day-to-day operations of the fire extinguisher program, including work orders, inventory, budget projections, vendor management, inspections, and record maintenance.
  • Train new Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Technicians.
  • Plan, organize, develop, and assist with the field implementation of occupational safety and health programs and services.
  • Continuously evaluate and modify Occupational Safety & Health policies, programs, procedures, and services based on customer feedback and audits.
  • Assist in the prompt communication of workplace incident/injury information to Illinois OSHA for reportable injuries and investigations.
  • Coordinate departmental participation in near miss and incident investigations, review injury reports, conduct injury/illness trending, and make recommendations for corrective actions.
  • Assist in prioritizing budgetary needs for occupational safety and health programs and services and provide oversight for expenditures.
  • Report on departmental, programmatic, and service metrics, accomplishments, gaps, and areas for improvement.
  • Assist with the assessment and prioritization of needs for the Occupational Safety & Health Department.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including supporting the Purpose, Values and Guiding Principles of Facilities & Services, liaising with various stakeholders, assisting with strategic planning, serving on safety committees, pursuing professional development, and operating a university vehicle for work-related travel.
