About The Position

The Assistant Director of Facilities, Safety & Operations plays a critical leadership role in ensuring Academy of Hope Adult Public Charter School's campuses are safe, secure, operationally efficient, and prepared to support exceptional learning experiences for adult learners and employees. Reporting to the Director of Enterprise Services, this position oversees the day-to-day management of facilities operations, building engineering, infrastructure, safety, security, maintenance, operational project management, and regulatory compliance across the Academy's portfolio of three facilities, including two leased campuses and one Academy-owned building. The Assistant Director provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for all building systems, preventive maintenance programs, capital improvement initiatives, environmental health and safety, emergency preparedness, vendor management, and facilities-related projects. The position serves as the Academy's operational leader for physical infrastructure, ensuring facilities remain safe, functional, compliant, and aligned with organizational priorities. This position directly supervises the Operations Manager and Building Engineers, while overseeing contracted vendors responsible for custodial services, security, mechanical systems, construction, landscaping, and other specialized building services. The successful candidate is a collaborative leader with strong technical knowledge, project management expertise, financial acumen, and a commitment to operational excellence.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Facilities Management, Engineering, Construction Management, Building Science, Architecture, Operations Management, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a closely related field. An equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in facilities management, operations, engineering, maintenance, or building management.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience leading facilities personnel, operations staff, or contracted service providers.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple facilities or campuses, including oversight of building systems, preventive maintenance programs, vendor contracts, operational budgets, and facilities-related projects.
  • Working knowledge of commercial building systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, structural, fire protection, security, and building automation systems.
  • Strong leadership, project management, organizational, analytical, communication, and customer service skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the daily operations of all Academy facilities, ensuring safe, secure, efficient, and well-maintained campuses across multiple locations.
  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve facilities policies, operating procedures, preventive maintenance programs, and service standards.
  • Establish operational priorities and performance expectations that support the Academy's strategic goals and operational excellence.
  • Conduct regular facility inspections to assess building conditions, identify maintenance needs, evaluate life safety concerns, and ensure a professional appearance throughout all campuses.
  • Develop corrective action plans and monitor completion of facility improvements, repairs, and operational initiatives.
  • Monitor facility performance metrics and identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency, service delivery, and resource utilization.
  • Support long-range facilities planning and future campus expansion initiatives.
  • Oversee the maintenance, operation, and performance of all building systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, roofing, structural components, fire protection systems, access control systems, mechanical equipment, emergency power systems, and building automation systems.
  • Direct the work of Facilities Engineers in implementing preventive and corrective maintenance programs.
  • Develop equipment lifecycle management plans and replacement schedules for major building systems.
  • Ensure maintenance records, warranties, inspections, equipment inventories, and service documentation are maintained in accordance with regulatory and organizational standards.
  • Coordinate emergency repairs and system outages while minimizing operational disruption.
  • Lead the Academy's comprehensive safety, security, and emergency preparedness programs by ensuring compliance with OSHA, ADA, fire and life safety regulations, and applicable District of Columbia building codes across all campuses.
  • Oversee campus security operations, visitor management, access control systems, emergency response planning, safety inspections, incident reporting, and corrective action initiatives to promote a safe and secure environment for learners, employees, volunteers, and visitors.
  • Serve as the primary facilities representative during emergencies and coordinate with school leadership, public safety agencies, landlords, and regulatory authorities to ensure organizational readiness and continuity of operations.
  • Lead the planning, coordination, and execution of facilities-related capital improvement projects, renovations, infrastructure upgrades, space planning initiatives, and operational improvements while ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and in accordance with organizational standards.
  • Supervise the Operations Manager in coordinating operational projects, campus logistics, building readiness, furniture and equipment installations, and cross-functional initiatives that support Academy operations.
  • Manage relationships with contractors, consultants, vendors, landlords, and service providers by overseeing procurement activities, contract administration, performance expectations, and service delivery for facilities, maintenance, security, custodial, landscaping, and specialty trade services.
  • Evaluate operational needs and recommend innovative solutions, technologies, and process improvements that enhance service delivery, operational efficiency, and the overall campus experience.
  • Assist in the development and administration of operating and capital budgets by monitoring expenditures, managing vendor contracts, forecasting facility needs, and identifying cost-saving opportunities while maintaining high-quality services.
  • Oversee asset management, equipment inventories, preventive maintenance documentation, regulatory inspections, permits, and compliance records to ensure facilities meet all applicable federal, state, local, and organizational requirements.
  • Serve as the Academy's liaison with landlords, utility providers, government agencies, inspectors, and regulatory authorities on facilities-related operational matters.
  • Provide leadership, supervision, coaching, and performance management for the Operations Manager and Facilities Engineers while fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, customer service, continuous improvement, and operational excellence.
  • Partner with the Director of Enterprise Services and leaders across Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology, Academic Affairs, Enrollment, and other departments to align facilities operations with organizational priorities and strategic initiatives.
  • Support Academy-wide events, emergency operations, and organizational initiatives while serving as a trusted resource and subject matter expert on facilities management, operational planning, and campus infrastructure.
