About The Position

The Director of Facilities is responsible for the strategic planning, development, operation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of Birdon’s Pensacola shipbuilding and advanced manufacturing campus. This executive leadership role oversees facility infrastructure, utilities, grounds, maintenance operations, capital projects, environmental compliance, security, and long-term asset management. The Director of Facilities will play a critical role in supporting Birdon’s growing shipbuilding and manufacturing operations by ensuring the facility, equipment, and infrastructure are safe, reliable, efficient, and capable of supporting production demands. The position requires strong leadership in industrial facility management, construction, capital planning, and regulatory compliance within a complex maritime manufacturing environment. The successful candidate will work closely with Operations, Engineering, Supply Chain, Human Resources, Safety, Quality, and Executive Leadership to develop and maintain a world-class facility that supports Birdon’s long-term growth strategy.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Construction Management, Facilities Management, Industrial Technology, or related field.
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive facilities, maintenance, construction, or infrastructure management experience.
  • Minimum 5 years in a senior leadership role within manufacturing, shipbuilding, aerospace, defense, industrial, maritime, or heavy industrial environments.
  • Demonstrated experience managing large industrial facilities and infrastructure systems.
  • Experience leading capital improvement and facility expansion projects.
  • Strong knowledge of facility maintenance, utilities, construction management, asset management, and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience managing budgets, contractors, and cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in engineering, Business Administration, or related field.
  • Certified Facility Manager (CFM), Facilities Management Professional (FMP), PMP, or equivalent professional certification.
  • Experience in shipbuilding, marine operations, defense manufacturing, or government contracting environments.
  • Knowledge of waterfront infrastructure, dry docks, piers, heavy-lift systems, and industrial utility networks.
  • Lean Manufacturing or Continuous Improvement certification.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive facilities management strategy aligned with Birdon’s operational and growth objectives.
  • Lead all facility-related functions including maintenance, utilities, infrastructure, construction, grounds, and asset management.
  • Establish facility performance goals and key metrics to maximize reliability, efficiency, and operational readiness.
  • Develop long-range facility plans to support current and future shipbuilding, manufacturing, and logistics activities.
  • Ensure facility infrastructure supports production schedules and customer commitments.
  • Direct preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance programs for buildings, utilities, equipment, cranes, docks, marine facilities, and site infrastructure.
  • Develop asset lifecycle management programs to maximize equipment uptime and return on investment.
  • Implement reliability-centered maintenance practices and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Monitor facility performance and identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce downtime.
  • Oversee computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and maintenance reporting.
  • Lead planning, budgeting, design, and execution of facility expansion projects, infrastructure improvements, and capital investments.
  • Manage contractors, architects, engineers, and construction teams.
  • Ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and to quality standards.
  • Coordinate permitting and regulatory approvals for capital projects.
  • Support future facility growth and modernization initiatives.
  • Oversee facility utility systems including electrical, water, wastewater, compressed air, HVAC, fire protection, and communications systems.
  • Ensure reliable operation of shipyard infrastructure such as docks, piers, laydown areas, fabrication facilities, and transportation networks.
  • Develop contingency and disaster recovery plans to minimize operational disruptions.
  • Monitor energy usage and implement sustainability and efficiency initiatives.
  • Promote a strong culture of safety and environmental stewardship.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, USCG, local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Support environmental management programs including stormwater, waste handling, emissions control, and hazardous material management.
  • Lead facility audits, inspections, and corrective action programs.
  • Maintain facility emergency response and business continuity plans.
  • Oversee physical security systems, access control, visitor management, and facility protection programs.
  • Ensure compliance with customer, government, and company security requirements.
  • Manage site services including custodial operations, landscaping, parking, and general facility support functions.
  • Coordinate with local authorities and emergency response organizations as needed.
  • Develop and manage annual operating and capital budgets.
  • Monitor expenditures and identify opportunities for cost savings and efficiency improvements.
  • Support strategic investment planning and business case development for facility upgrades and expansion projects.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports regarding facility performance and capital expenditures.
  • Recruit, develop, and retain high-performing facilities and maintenance personnel.
  • Provide leadership and direction to facility managers, maintenance supervisors, technicians, and contractors.
  • Create a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
  • Support workforce development initiatives and succession planning.
  • Partner with Operations and Production teams to ensure facilities support manufacturing requirements.
  • Collaborate with Engineering on equipment installations, facility modifications, and process improvements.
  • Work closely with Safety, Environmental, Quality, and HR teams to ensure organizational objectives are achieved.
  • Represent the facilities organization during customer visits, audits, and inspections.
