About The Position

The Assistant Director of the JDP supports the Director in providing academic leadership for the program. The Assistant Director works closely with the Director, the Program Coordinator, the JDP Committee and the JDP Deans to support the goals and the strategic plan of the program. In collaboration with the JDP leadership team, the Director is responsible for the vision and direction of the program. As the two-year term progresses, it is expected that the Assistant Director will take on increasing responsibilities consistent with being mentored for the role of Director. The position reports to and is evaluated by the JDP administrative deans—the Senior Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Education and the Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs and Academic Dean of the Iliff School of Theology. This position is a two (2) year term.

Requirements

  • Be a full-time, tenured faculty member in good standing at the institution.
  • Have a record of good relations and cooperation with faculty from both institutions.
  • Have experience working with doctoral students and directing dissertations.
  • Know the current program, including its policies and procedures as found in the JDP Faculty Handbook and Policy Manual.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as academic advisor for students in coursework, advising them quarterly until they choose a dissertation advisor (note: this work will be limited to the 5 students who will be in coursework in 26-27)
  • Recruit faculty to participate in the program.
  • Facilitate scheduling of classes.
  • Facilitate prompt and effective communication and cooperation with faculty, staff, students, chairs, and deans to assure the effective administration of the program.
  • Serve on Executive Committee and JDP Committee, and chair those committees in the Director’s absence.
  • Represent the JDP on DU's Graduate Council in the absence of the Director.
  • Convene a DU-JDP Advisory Committee on DU-owned financial accounts when from DU.
  • Coordinate annual program assessment activities with the Program Coordinator.
  • Promote diversity and inclusion.
  • Meet with prospective students.
  • Recruit students to the program and support recruitment efforts.
  • Host receptions at AAR and SBL to publicize the program if the Director cannot attend.
  • Cultivate a culture of inclusivity and respect for diversity.
  • Develop, support and encourage the pursuit of interdisciplinarity throughout the program.
  • Hear student complaints with regard to academic and curricular matters as appropriate.
  • Handle student academic or social misconduct in conjunction with the Director.
  • Together with the Director, review routine petitions that don’t require JDP Committee action.
  • Help students make professional connections to support diverse career options.
  • Work with JDP Director, Director of Budget and Planning in the Office of Graduate Education and JDP Program Coordinator to project tuition income and develop annual budget.
  • Work with the JDP Director, Program Coordinator, Director of Budget and Planning, and JDP Committee to determine student financial aid awards, if such are necessary in the proposed new iteration of the Program
  • Collaborate with Program Coordinator and JDP Director to advocate Iliff and DU advancement and development strategies.
