About The Position

The Assistant Director for Graduate Studies is responsible for supporting the Director of Graduate Studies, developing and leading strategic initiatives and advising the graduate students in the Marine Biology, Marine and Coastal Environmental Sciences and Maritime Business Administration Departments. This position will be part of a team in Research & Graduate Studies where we support team projects and assist the Research side from time to time.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Six years of advising experience, with some management experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to use word processing, spreadsheet and database programs.
  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
  • This position is security sensitive.
  • This position requires compliance with state and federal laws/codes and Texas A&M University System/TAMU policies, regulations, rules and procedures.
  • All tasks and job responsibilities must be performed safely without injury to self or others in compliance with System and University safety requirements

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in education, counseling, or general subject area of placement.
  • Five or more years of experience in responsible management experience, preferably in higher education, including some supervisory experience.

Responsibilities

  • Serves on management team with Director.
  • Handles special projects as assigned by the Director.
  • Provides leadership for department along with and in the absence of the Director.
  • Serves on various campus committees as a representative of the Graduate Studies office.
  • Prepares various academic and advising reports.
  • Develops systems for maintaining records of student contacts.
  • Develops and revises informational materials.
  • Maintains RGSO handbooks and syllabus and coordinates graduate program level handbooks.
  • Manages the assessment for the Graduate Studies Office.
  • Develops strategic plans with the coordination of the Director and implements student support programs intended to enhance the retention of identified groups.
  • Develops, implements, coordinates, and evaluates programs.
  • Participates in planning, directing, and coordinating operational procedural matters to meet department goals and objectives.
  • Support of TAMUG graduate programs and departmental functions.
  • Assists Director with planning and budgeting for various initiatives within the department.
  • Monitors compliance with all unit, department, University and government standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Monitors and advises graduate students including but not limited to using the University system for student registration, degree audit, course prerequisites etc.
  • Advises students in areas incoming tasks such as degree plan filing inter-college transfer, professional concerns, housing, financial aid, student services, degree programs, and career and educational goals.
  • Serves as Advisor for the Student Organization: Galveston Graduate Student Association.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
