About The Position

This role oversees established library services such as peer-to-peer academic tutoring and a newly created peer-to-peer research & reference service. It involves developing, coordinating, and hosting programming and workshops focused on creativity and experimentation in the library’s makerspace. The position also includes hiring, training, and supervising undergraduate student employees, arranging traditional library events and programs, and reviewing/assessing services and programs. A key aspect is developing relationships and engaging with library-building partners and other University departments. The role also entails teaching course-integrated information literacy, AI literacy, and library research instruction, including the creation of asynchronous learning tools. Providing in-depth research and reference assistance, educating students on the ethical use of AI and emerging technologies, and participating in professional development are also core duties. The Assistant Director will serve on library and campus committees and perform other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in library and information science, or equivalent.
  • 1 year of professional experience in an academic, public, or school library.
  • Demonstrated experience planning, implementation, and overseeing library programming and/or services.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching information literacy and critical thinking skills.
  • Demonstrated experience providing research and reference assistance via a variety of methods (e.g. in person, email, chat, text).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of AI tools (e.g., language models, citation generators, data visualization platforms).
  • Interest and ability to explore and incorporate arts and emerging technologies into learning and research support.
  • Ability to work flexibly and creatively both with others in a team environment as well as independently.
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating on multi-department, cross-organizational initiatives.
  • Proficiency in Google G-suite; MS Word and Excel.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, collaborative, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Possess and demonstrate the ability to work with diverse constituencies and have excellent skills in oral and written communication.
  • Interest in understanding and supporting John Carroll’s mission to inspire individuals to excel in learning, leadership, and service in the region and in the world.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience training and supervising undergraduate student employees.
  • Familiarity with Springshare products (e.g. LibGuides, LibAnswers).
  • Experience in the ethical and effective use of AI in teaching and library services.
  • Familiarity with Student Information System and Learning Management Systems, e.g. Canvas.
  • Experience with teaching or tutoring.
  • Examples of initiative, resourcefulness, and creativity.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the library’s established peer-to-peer academic tutoring service, including direct supervision of a Graduate Assistant.
  • Manage the library’s newly created peer-to-peer research & reference service.
  • Develop, coordinate, and host programming & workshops focusing on creativity and experimentation in the library’s makerspace.
  • Hire, train, and supervise undergraduate student employees.
  • Arrange for traditional library events and programs for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Review and assess services and programs.
  • Develop relationships and engage with library-building partners and other University departments.
  • Teach course-integrated information literacy, AI literacy, and library research instruction throughout the University’s curriculum and programs, including the creation of asynchronous learning tools & objects.
  • Provide in-depth research & reference assistance to support student and faculty scholarship.
  • Educate students on effective, ethical, and responsible uses of generative AI and other emerging technologies.
  • Participate in professional development to stay aware of new teaching and library research tools for services, outreach & engagement, and information literacy.
  • Serve on library and John Carroll University campus committees, task forces, and working groups as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.
