About The Position

The Assistant Director, College of Education Advising and Student Success, supports the Director in providing leadership and operational coordination for advising services within the College of Education, delivered through the SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union Center for Careers in Teaching (CCT) and department-based credential and graduate advising units. This role involves leading and supporting a team of academic advisors to ensure coordinated, equitable, and student-centered advising practices. The position focuses on supporting recruitment, particularly for historically underrepresented populations in educator preparation, CSU General Education (GE) alignment, teacher pathway development, credential and graduate program admission, persistence, and completion, aligning with the College of Education’s enrollment and student success goals. The Assistant Director also establishes and maintains collaborative partnerships with academic departments, faculty, and campus stakeholders to advance data-informed decision-making related to student transitions, retention, and program outcomes. The ideal candidate is expected to demonstrate highly ethical practices and a commitment to inclusivity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent from an accredited four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution.
  • Four years of professional student services work experience including experience advising students individually and in groups, as well as the analysis and resolution of complex student services problems.
  • Thorough knowledge of the policies, procedures, and practices of the program area to which assigned or the ability to quickly acquire such knowledge.
  • General knowledge of the policies, practices, and activities of Student Services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned.
  • General knowledge of the principles, problems, and methods of public administration, including organizational, personnel and fiscal management.
  • General knowledge of advanced statistical and research methods.
  • Ability to carry out very complex assignments without detailed instructions.
  • Ability to advise students individually or in groups on varied and complex matters.
  • Ability to determine the appropriate course of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals and groups in personal interactions of a sensitive nature.
  • Ability to reason logically and analyze and solve organizational and operating problems of one or several program areas.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate and initiate actions necessary to implement administrative or group decisions or recommendations.

  • Experience in processing credential and graduate program admissions and advising students through complex progression requirements.
  • Experience analyzing program-level data related to recruitment, retention, and undergraduate-to-credential and graduate program transition, including identifying equity gaps and using findings to inform program improvements and strategic initiatives.
  • Familiarity with advising and student success technologies such as EAB/TitanNet, MyCOE, CMS, or similar platforms.
  • Experience collaborating with academic departments, enrollment management units, and external partners such as community colleges and school districts to support recruitment and pathway development.
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate complex interpersonal dynamics, interpret, and apply University, College, and program policies, and facilitate resolution of issues involving multiple stakeholders in sensitive or high-stakes situations while maintaining effective working relationships.
  • A demonstrated commitment to advancing equitable student outcomes, including supporting the recruitment and success of students from historically underrepresented populations.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with and support the Director in providing leadership and operational coordination for College of Education advising services delivered through the SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union Center for Careers in Teaching (CCT) and department-based credential and graduate advising units.
  • Lead and support a team of academic advisors.
  • Work in partnership with the Director to ensure coordinated, equitable, and student-centered advising practices that support recruitment, with particular focus on expanding access and participation of students from historically underrepresented populations in educator preparation, CSU General Education (GE) alignment, teacher pathway development, credential and graduate program admission, persistence, and completion in alignment with the College of Education’s enrollment and student success goals.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative partnerships with academic departments, faculty, and campus stakeholders in support of student success initiatives.
  • Advance data-informed decision-making related to undergraduate-to-credential transition, retention, and program outcomes.
  • Independently plan and organize work priorities within assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Determine appropriate methodologies within assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Resolve unusual and complex situations without detailed instruction within assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Make decisions that impact multiple advising units and student services areas within assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
