About The Position

The Theatre Arts Department in the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of North Dakota is seeking a part-time Assistant Costume Shop Manager. This position is 20 hours/week, 1:00p.m.-5:00p.m., Monday-Thursdays (Fridays off until closer to productions). The hours may change in accordance to the needs of the productions. The anticipated appointment period runs August 16-May 15.

Requirements

• Hand sewing proficiency
• Machine sewing proficiency
• Proficient in the use of an Overlock (Serger)
• Ability to maintain sewing machines
• Ability to create garments using purchased patterns
• Highly organized and self-sufficient for meeting deadlines
• Ability to effectively organize and lead a team of students with varying levels of costume shop or sewing experience
• HS diploma or GED equivalent
• Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Responsibilities

• Collaborates with the Costume Designer/Costume Shop Manager to oversee the fabrication and fit of all garments for all theatrical productions.
• Schedules and supervises students working in the costume shop, assisting and guiding as needed based on varying levels of sewing ability, to ensure projects assigned by the Costume Designer/Costume Shop Manager are completed in time for use in each show as shown on the costume shop calendar.
• Daily tasks include prepping projects, alterations, and creating a to-do list.
• Uses both existing (purchased) and custom patterns to construct costumes and guide students in creating costumes, depending on the needs of the show.
• Maintains costume shop space and the costume storage space.
• Oversees 5-10 students alongside the Costume Shop Manager.
