About The Position

Join the School of Theatre, Film & Television as a Costume Shop Stitcher and play an essential role in creating, altering, and maintaining costumes for productions. Working alongside the Costume Shop Manager, you will construct garments, support production needs, and provide guidance to student workers while ensuring costumes are completed to the highest standard and within established timelines. This is a 9-month academic year position with evening and weekend work as needed to meet production schedules.

Requirements

Skilled in using various sewing machines and hand-sewing techniques.
Knowledge of different types of stitches, seams, and hems.
Ability to read and interpret sewing patterns, which involves understanding symbols, measurements, and construction methods.
Familiarity with different types of fabrics and knowledge of their properties and how they behave during sewing.
Ability to take accurate measurements and fitting garments to ensure they meet the desired specifications.
High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Nice To Haves

Degree or certification in Costume Design, Fashion Design, Theatre Arts, or a related field is preferred.
Experience in altering and repairing garments, which requires a good eye for detail and the ability to make adjustments while maintaining the garments' integrity.
Experience in costume construction and alteration, preferably in a theatrical or educational setting.

Responsibilities

Support costume shop manager and costume designers in fittings and garment alterations.
Sew, construct, maintain, and repair costumes for productions.
Ensure costumes are cleaned, repaired, and stored properly between productions.
Assist in organizing and maintaining the costume shop, including inventory management of fabrics, patterns, and other supplies.
Assist with budgeting and ordering of materials as needed.
Assist with training and mentoring students in costume and garment construction and maintenance.
