About The Position

The University of Florida, College of Veterinary Medicine and Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences invites applications from qualified individuals for a full-time clinical or tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Clinical Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. The selected candidate will be expected to lead a multidisciplinary team that will perform open-heart procedures using cardiopulmonary bypass. A period of training in mitral valve repair surgery by our current open-heart surgeon is possible, commensurate with the needs of the successful applicant. This position is focused on teaching and clinical service but also provides opportunities to participate in clinical and bench-top research. Teaching responsibilities could include didactic and clinical instruction in the professional curriculum and the instruction of residents and interns from a variety of related services. Participation in the clinical service in the UF Veterinary Hospital includes receiving and management of clinical cases, consultations within the hospital and with referring veterinarians, participating in the growth of this service, and continuing education. The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team of staff and veterinarians who are dedicated to an established program for mitral valve repair and other types of open-heart surgery in dogs. The program has run continuously since 2023 and over 100 dogs have received mitral valve repair surgery with >90% success. The Small Animal Hospital’s open heart surgery program is comprised of a comprehensive infrastructure supporting all aspects of patients undergoing open heart surgery, including experienced specialists and staff in the areas of cardiology, anesthesia, in-house perfusion, operating room support, and the intensive care unit. Administrative and technical support are dedicated to the program. State‐of‐the‐art equipment and facilities currently available include a fully equipped surgical room dedicated to open heart surgery, a cardiopulmonary bypass machine with perfusion support provided by an experienced perfusionist, and a portable echocardiography machine. Other imaging modalities available in the hospital include nuclear imaging, MRI, CT scanning, and state-of-the-art interventional suite. The UF College of Veterinary Medicine has strong collaborative ties with the College of Medicine pediatric and adult cardiology programs located across the street. Development of an independent or collaborative research program in an area of special interest is encouraged. Extensive opportunities for collaborative research exists within the College and with the UF College of Medicine. The veterinary hospital also includes a robust clinical trials service. The successful candidate will have access to a well-equipped Clinical Sciences Research Laboratory and be eligible to compete for competitive intramural and endowed research funds. Requirements

  • DVM or equivalent degree
  • Demonstrated success in cardiac surgery in dogs.

Nice To Haves

  • Board-certification by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons is preferred.
