The Center for Native American and Indigenous Studies at Emory University seeks applications from scholars with expertise in Native American and Indigenous Studies, at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor. We understand Indigenous Studies to be simultaneously regional, hemispheric, and global while always anchored by the epistemologies of, and responsibilities to, those on whose lands we are located. We welcome applicants who collaborate with Indigenous communities in North America, South America, and the Pacific. We are searching for two scholars of any rank, including those currently completing PhDs, to fill disciplinary needs in a variety of areas that serve our planned minor in NAIS. We seek scholars who focus on Indigenous research and methods at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and who have a critical, interdisciplinary orientation spanning the humanities, social sciences, fine arts and STEM fields, including the study of health, critical theory, the environment, literature, politics, law, history, arts and culture, sovereignty, the study of Nation building, race, gender and/or sexuality. All applicants must have a demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring a diverse student body. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in a relevant field at the time of appointment. Successful candidates at the Associate or Full level will be at the forefront of current scholarship that is redefining Indigenous Studies and rewriting academic, legal, and/or popular narratives of Indigenous peoples, with a national and/or international reputation. At the level of Assistant Professor, successful candidates will show strong records of scholarly achievement and the potential for leadership in Indigenous Studies. The successful candidates will be active scholars who are grounded in Indigenous knowledge systems and can demonstrate evidence of their commitment to working with Indigenous students and communities. As members of our Native American and Indigenous Studies Academic Learning Community, the candidates will contribute to shaping the future of Native American and Indigenous Studies at Emory, where faculty, staff, and students are building an initiative that will have impact for generations to come. At Emory University, Native American and Indigenous Studies is a University initiative located within the Emory College of Arts and Sciences that prioritizes partnerships with Indigenous communities and leads curricular programs, including co-teaching, with faculty at the College of the Muscogee Nation. Our Academic Learning Community includes faculty from both Emory College and Oxford College in Music, Art history, English, History, Environmental Sciences, Neuroscience, Italian Studies, and Political Science. Focusing on visibility, representation in the curriculum, and enhancing faculty research, this collaborative work aims to cultivate meaningful relationships with local communities and those who have traditional or historic relationships to Emory’s campuses, especially Indigenous communities of the Southeast. Programmatic leadership experience that takes place within community and academic spaces is welcomed. In the last five years, Emory has hired five new faculty members in this field and established the Center for Native American and Indigenous Studies, funded in part by a Mellon Foundation grant that also supports Muscogee language teaching and preservation at the College of the Muscogee Nation.
