About The Position

The Department of Philosophy at Furman University invites applications for the position of Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of Philosophy, beginning August 1, 2027. The area of specialization is History of Philosophy (Ancient Greek and Roman Philosophy, Medieval and Renaissance Philosophy, Arabic and Islamic Philosophy, or Early Modern Philosophy), with an open area of competence. The department has a need for courses across a wide range of pre-19th century contexts, so candidates who can teach in more than one historical period would be particularly welcome. The successful candidate will have broad philosophical interests and will be a dynamic and engaging teacher committed to working with students with diverse interests and backgrounds. Requirements

A Ph.D. in Philosophy is required by August 1, 2027.
Submit a letter of interest, C.V., statement of teaching philosophy, and evidence of innovative teaching.
Arrange for three letters of reference to be sent on your behalf.
The statement of teaching philosophy should describe inclusive teaching and mentoring efforts, broadly conceived, and how teaching and mentoring may contribute to a liberal arts and sciences community that aims to “honor inquiry, promote diversity, [and] strive for equity”.
May discuss relevant professional development, service contributions, or other experiences that have refined skills or demonstrate efforts in these areas.

Nice To Haves

Candidates who can teach in more than one historical period would be particularly welcome.
Teaching engages the history of philosophy in innovative ways, with the potential for intersections with one or more of Furman’s interdisciplinary minors.

Responsibilities

Teach five courses per academic year, including both introductory and upper-level offerings.
Teach at least one section of “Introduction to Philosophy” annually.
Teach periodic First-Year Writing (FYW) seminars on a topic of the candidate’s choosing.
Engage the history of philosophy in innovative ways, with the potential for intersections with one or more of Furman’s interdisciplinary minors.
