About The Position

The Philosophy Department at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, seeks candidates with expertise in Early Modern Philosophy, for a tenure-track/tenured position at the Assistant/Associate/Full Professor level with a target start date of August 16, 2027. The successful candidate will teach 4 courses per year (2 per semester) at the lower- and upper-division undergraduate and graduate levels, with particular instructional needs in graduate-level courses in Early Modern Philosophy and with our upper-classmen capstone class. Duties include teaching assigned courses, graduate and undergraduate advising; research in the candidate’s areas of expertise that will result in publications and other research outputs; and service including participation in faculty meetings, departmental committees, and other departmental initiatives, as well as service to the college, university, and profession. The successful candidate will contribute to the mission of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at the University of Illinois, where curiosity drives impact. Requirements

Ph.D in philosophy or a related discipline.
Evidence of ability to contribute significantly to the department and discipline through research, teaching, service, and leadership.
For applicants at the Assistant Professor level: evidence of a promising research agenda and a commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching.
For applicants at the Associate/Full Professor level: an established record in research, teaching, and service.
All candidates should demonstrate evidence of creativity and success in teaching at levels appropriate to experience.
For associate and full candidates: accomplishment at all levels (lower and upper-level undergraduate and graduate) and scholarly research.
Demonstrate experience with fostering or the ability to foster an inclusive and collaborative teaching, learning, departmental, and research environment where all can thrive.

Nice To Haves

Expertise in Early Modern Philosophy.
Candidates whose PhD may be delayed but will complete all the Ph.D. requirements within the first appointment year may be appointed at the rank of Instructor. After the Ph.D. requirement is met, the appointment will be changed to Assistant Professor.

Responsibilities

Teach 4 courses per year (2 per semester) at the lower- and upper-division undergraduate and graduate levels.
Teach graduate-level courses in Early Modern Philosophy.
Teach upper-classmen capstone classes.
Graduate and undergraduate advising.
Research in the candidate’s areas of expertise (including Early Modern Philosophy) that will result in publications with appropriate journals and university presses (or other equivalent academic presses), as well as other research outputs, such as grants, fellowships, awards, and scholarly presentations.
Service that includes participation in faculty meetings, departmental committees and other departmental initiatives as assigned, as well as service to the college, university, and profession.
Contribute to the mission of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.
