About The Position

This role requires mid-level accounting skills and experience. The Assistant Accounting Manager - Accounts Payable duties will include compiling financial information, preparing financial reports, and performing analysis as needed. Preparing or processing journal entries, reconciling accounts, and providing financial data to business partners and management are also required functions. A strong foundational knowledge of basic accounting concepts is required. An understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, applicable regulations, and BankUnited accounting policies and procedures is required. This position is primarily focused on Accounts Payable.

Requirements

  • Mid-level accounting skills and experience.
  • Strong foundational knowledge of basic accounting concepts.
  • Understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, applicable regulations, and BankUnited accounting policies and procedures.
  • 7 - 9 years of accounting experience required.
  • 4 - 6 years progressive bank accounting experience.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrated strong knowledge of general and bank specific accounting principles and banking regulations.
  • Must possess a strong understanding of the software application used in the specific area.

Nice To Haves

  • Public accounting experience with exposure to the banking industry or specific banking industry experience preferred.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred.
  • Candidates residing in locations within BankUnited's footprint may be given preference.

Responsibilities

  • Compiles financial information, account analyses, and financial disclosures or reports.
  • Records, classifies, and summarizes financial transactions in accordance with Company policy and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Keeps up to date on policies, procedures, and regulations that apply to the assigned job function.
  • Ensures completeness and accuracy of work performed and compliance with the Company's established accounting and control policies and procedures.
  • Initiates and processes journal entries as appropriate for the assigned area(s) of responsibility.
  • Reconciles sub-ledgers to the general ledger and resolves differences. Assists other departments with reconciliation differences.
  • Explains accounting transactions and resolves accounting issues and discrepancies.
  • Develops proficiency with accounting software applications used by the Company.
  • May specialize in one or more specific areas within the accounting department. Examples include accounts payable, fixed assets, consolidations, reconciliations, investment accounting, loans, leases, or taxes.
  • Must be well versed in the accounting principles, processes, and control procedures specific to the area of responsibility.
  • Assists in maintaining written accounting procedures.
  • Performs month-end variance analysis for assigned income and expense accounts.
  • Prepares financial information, reports, and/or statements of greater complexity than those required at the Staff Accountant I or II level and analyzes the results as required.
  • Prepares and files regulatory reports as needed.
  • Prepares monthly and ad-hoc financial reports and statements for management as requested.
  • May be given limited authority to approve ACH batches or a/p checks at the discretion of management.
  • Must possess a strong understanding of the software application used in the specific area.
  • Adheres to and complies with applicable, federal and state laws, regulations, and guidance, including those related to anti-money laundering (i.e. Bank Secrecy Act, US PATRIOT Act, etc.).
  • Adheres to Bank policies and procedures and completes required training.
  • Identifies and reports suspicious activity.
  • Supervises function, projects, or services and/or one or more employees, as applicable.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; coaching, rewarding, and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
