About The Position

Marshall University’s Department of Housing and Residence Life seeks outgoing, energetic, and skilled applicants for a full-time, 12-month live-in professional responsible for a residential living community at Marshall University. The communities house between 250-850 students, a team of Resident Advisors ranging from 6 to 28 and has the potential to supervise an Assistant Area Coordinator.

Requirements

  • Full-time, 12-month live-in professional position.
  • Supervise Resident Advisors and an Assistant Area Coordinator.
  • Conduct individual meetings and bi-annual evaluations.
  • Assist with selecting, training, development, and in-service activities for paraprofessional staff.
  • Coordinate summer responsibilities (Summer Area Coordinator, Summer Conferences, Damage Billing Appeals).
  • Coordinate collateral responsibilities (Student Staff Training, Student Staff Selection, Student Leadership).
  • Serve as senior advisor to RHA executive board and NRHH chapter.
  • Oversee student leadership conferences and Housing and Residence Life Banquet.
  • Promote a caring atmosphere conducive to student learning, academic success, and personal development.

  • Assess effectiveness of hall traditions & learning outcomes.
  • Encourage professionalism, role modeling, and positive communication.
  • Maintain high residence hall visibility and interaction.
  • Implement and manage residential curriculum and learning outcomes.
  • Develop positive working relationships with campus offices.
  • Facilitate academic initiatives (faculty collaboration, study groups, tutoring).
  • Advise and counsel students, making referrals when needed.
  • Manage student behavior through conduct sanctioning and advising.
  • Hear, adjudicate, and mediate student housing conduct process.
  • Facilitate roommate mediation.
  • Assist with university and housing recruitment, orientation, and retention efforts.
  • Implement departmental goals and objectives.
  • Responsible for facility management, housing operations, and housing processes.
  • Serve on an on-call duty rotation (nights, weekdays, weekends, holidays).
  • Maintain office hours and availability for residents.
  • Oversee residence hall desk operations.
  • Manage area and committee budgets and purchasing.
  • Exhibit effective time management and task execution.
  • Ability to work independently and with accuracy.
  • Work with confidence and maturity.
  • Understand confidentiality.
  • Participate in department initiatives (strategic planning, retention, programming, Housing Sign-ups, Week of Welcome, Opening/Closing).
  • Work collaboratively with department, division, Student Affairs, and university staff.
  • Enforce University and departmental policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise Resident Advisors and an Assistant Area Coordinator and conducts individual meetings, bi-annual evaluations, etc.
  • Contribute and encourage the development of positive working relationships with all residence life staff.
  • Attend and organize weekly staff meetings with building staff and/or departmental staff.
  • Assist with selecting, training, development and in-service activities for the paraprofessional staff.
  • Assist with coordination of fall & spring training as well as ongoing personal and professional staff development opportunities.
  • Coordinate one of the following over the summer months: Summer Area Coordinator, Summer Conferences, Damage Billing Appeals.
  • Coordinate one of the three following collaterals: Student Staff Training, Student Staff Selection, Student Leadership.
  • Mentor and be available to student leaders through RHA and NRHH.
  • Coordinate Student Leadership campus-wide fundraiser.
  • Serve as senior advisor to Residence Hall Association executive board.
  • Serve as senior advisor to National Residence Hall Honorary chapter.
  • Oversee participation and organizing of student leadership conferences.
  • Plan and facilitate the annual Housing and Residence Life Banquet.
  • Create and promote a caring atmosphere conducive to student learning, academic success, and to the personal development of residence hall students.
  • Promote an atmosphere that emphasizes Marshall’s values (academic achievement, personal freedom & integrity, dignity and respect for the individual, diversity and inclusiveness, sustainability, and service).
  • Work with Assistant Area Coordinators to assess effectiveness of hall traditions & learning outcomes.
  • Encourage behavior that demonstrates professionalism, role modeling, and positive communication.
  • Maintain a high level of residence hall visibility and interaction.
  • Implement and manage residential curriculum and learning outcomes in community.
  • Develop and maintain a positive and mutually supportive working relationship with all campus offices.
  • Facilitate and implement academic initiatives such as collaboration with faculty, promoting study groups and tutoring, working with relevant MU Marshall University academic offices.
  • Advise and counsel individual students, making referrals when needed.
  • Assist in the management of student behavior through conduct sanctioning and student advising.

  • Serve on an on-call duty coverage rotation and responds to emergency or non-emergency situations for campus community on nights, weekdays, weekends and holidays.
  • Maintain office hours (as set by your supervisor) and uphold high degree of availability and visibility for all residents.
  • Oversee residence hall desk operations.
  • Effectively manage area and committee budgets, as well as conduct all purchasing for hall activities in accordance with state purchasing expectations.
  • Exhibit effective time management strategies and excellence in executing tasks.
  • Ability to take tasks and work independently and with accuracy.
  • Work with confidence and maturity; and understands confidentiality within appropriate settings.
  • Participate in department initiatives such as strategic planning, retention initiatives, departmental programming, Housing Sign-ups, Week of Welcome, Opening and Closing of residence halls.
  • Work collaboratively with others in the department, division, Student Affairs and university.
  • Enforce University and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Understand there will be other duties as assigned by supervisors.
