About The Position

S&ME is looking for an Archaeological Field Crew Chief to join our Environmental team in Columbia, South Carolina. As an Archaeological Field Crew Chief, you will play a crucial role in supporting cultural resource projects through fieldwork, historical research, and client consultations. Your work will directly contribute to the preservation and understanding of historical and cultural artifacts, ensuring that our projects are conducted with the highest level of accuracy and integrity. This position requires extensive travel throughout the Southeast, Midwest, and Mid-Atlantic.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in anthropology, archaeology, history, or a related field
  • Minimum of 4 years of archaeological experience
  • National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Section 106 training
  • Strong problem-solving skills, clear communication, and sound judgment
  • Passion for cultural heritage, commitment to high-quality work, and ability to lead with both confidence and humility
  • Willing and able to perform the physical demands of the position with the use of company-provided Personal Protective Equipment
  • Willing and able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Willing and able to walk over rough, uneven terrain and stand (potentially up to 12 hours a day)
  • Willing and able to routinely lift and carry 40-50lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Willing and able to work outside of normal business hours and travel (typically out-of-town and/or overnight) as project needs arise
  • Must comply with Fleet Management, Substance Policy, and Reference Check requirements.
  • Must have valid employment eligibility (I-9).

Responsibilities

  • Perform and direct fieldwork and laboratory analyses, conduct research, and prepare reports.
  • Process basic artifacts in the laboratory.
  • Conduct fieldwork and background research, including artifact collection.
  • Assist with project support activities, including work plan and proposal preparation, project scheduling, deadline tracking, and budget evaluation and analysis.
  • Perform basic historical research.
