About The Position

In tandem with a seasoned WM Driver and/or WM Driver Trainer, after receiving their Commercial Driving Permit, the Driver Apprentice will complete the required training to safely operate a commercial motor vehicle providing service to customers in their respective Line of Business (LOB). The Driver Apprentice will continue in this role until they complete all training requirements. The Driver Apprentice will perform as an on-route Helper while obtaining their Commercial Driving Permit and completing the training to be a WM Driver. This role involves working in accordance with WM Safety and Life Critical Rules, OSHA (Occupational and Safety Health Act) requirements as well as all local, state and federal laws. The apprentice will immediately report all unsafe situations or service related issues to the Operations Manager or Dispatch. They will attend and participate in all scheduled training programs, briefings, and meetings as required by WM or directed by the Operations Manager. Responsibilities include manually or mechanically loading and emptying residential and/or commercial containers into the truck, operating hoisting devices, assisting the driver with backing maneuvers, and notifying management of any incidents, accidents, injuries, or property damage. The apprentice will also communicate customer requests and perform all duties as scheduled, assisting other drivers as directed to meet customer needs.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age and legally eligible to work in the United States.
  • Able to read, write, and speak English well enough to interact with the public, understand traffic signs, respond to official questions, and complete records or reports.
  • Commercial or Non-commercial Driver's License Class C or D
  • Successfully complete pre-employment screening, including drug screen and physical

Responsibilities

  • Partner with a WM Driver and/or WM Driver Trainer to train on the proper way to operate a commercial refuse / recycling vehicle.
  • Operate vehicle in accordance with WM Safety and Life Critical Rules, OSHA requirements, DOT requirements, and all local, state and federal laws.
  • Perform pre- and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicle and document checks utilizing the standard DVIR (Driver Vehicle Inspection Report).
  • Immediately report all unsafe situations or service related issues to Operations Manager or Dispatch.
  • Attend and participate in all scheduled training programs, briefings, and meetings as required by WM or directed by the Operations Manager.
  • Work closely with Operations Manager to improve route efficiencies and identify best practices.
  • Notify Operations Manager of any incidents, accidents, injuries, or property damage.
  • Notify Operations Manager or Dispatch of service interruptions including closed or impassable streets or alleyways, receptacles too heavy to service or potential safety hazards.
  • Communicate customer requests to Dispatch or Operations Manager.
  • Completely dump all receptacles and leave the customer’s location clean and free of debris.
  • Follow route assignments as directed and complete end of day documentation and check out process.
  • Perform all duties as scheduled by Operations Manager or Dispatch and assisting other drivers as directed to meet customer needs.
  • Perform as an on-route Helper while obtaining their Commercial Driving Permit and completing the training to be a WM Driver.
  • Manually or mechanically load and empty residential and/or commercial containers into truck.
  • Operate hoisting device to lift and empty bins or containers into truck hopper.
  • Assist driver with all backing maneuvers while on route.
