About The Position

The Apprentice Teacher role offers individuals with limited or no teaching experience hands-on practice and training to explore education and develop toward becoming a full-time classroom teacher. Based in Uncommon Schools’ New York City charter-school network, Apprentice Teachers observe experienced Master Teachers and school leaders, co-teach with teacher-leaders, provide substitute coverage, and support instruction through tutoring, grading, and individual or small-group student instruction. Depending on school needs and the candidate’s background, they may also teach a class with a limited teaching load. Apprentice Teachers participate in summer and school-year professional development and meet regularly with an instructional coach. They may support classroom and school activities such as teaching Enrichment classes, organizing student events, and mentoring students. By the end of the year, they are expected to be strong candidates for full-time teaching roles. The position requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university before employment begins. Certification is not required at hire, but candidates must meet New York State certification eligibility requirements. Employees without an education degree must enroll in a teacher preparation program and maintain a GPA of at least 2.5 during employment. Teachers are required to become certified in New York State within a reasonable period after starting.
