High School Apprentice Teacher

Uncommon Schools•New York, NY

About The Position

The Apprentice Teacher position is designed for people with limited or no teaching experience to explore education and gain hands-on classroom practice and training. In New York City, Apprentice Teachers observe experienced teachers and school leaders, co-teach with teacher-leaders, provide substitute coverage, and support instruction through tutoring, grading, and individual or small-group teaching. Depending on school needs and the candidate’s background, the role may include teaching a class with a limited teaching load. The position also supports work inside and outside the classroom, including enrichment classes, student events, and mentoring relationships. Apprentices participate in summer and school-year professional development and meet regularly with an instructional coach. The experience is intended to help apprentices develop the skills and experience to become candidates for full-time teaching positions. The role includes gradually taking on more responsibility for planning and delivering instruction, supporting students’ academic progress and behavior, and participating in classroom, grade-level, and school-wide activities. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required before employment begins. Certification is not required at hire, but employees must meet New York State certification eligibility requirements and become certified within a reasonable period after starting.
