About The Position

The Applications Specialist is the primary day-to-day technical representative for assigned customer accounts. The role delivers USP Technologies’ chemical treatment programs through wastewater sampling and analysis, chemical logistics planning and oversight, and minor maintenance of chemical feed and monitoring equipment. Working on-site at customer facilities, the specialist builds relationships with plant operators and management and turns field data into clear recommendations to keep treatment programs performing to contract expectations. This customer-facing role requires communicating program status and recommendations safely, reliably and professionally. The specialist works independently as well as with a cross-functional account team, coordinating with customers, suppliers, USP logistics, account managers, service teams and third-party laboratories as needed. Work may involve frequent travel, varied schedules, occasional long hours, on-call or emergency response, and routine exposure to hazardous chemicals and untreated wastewater.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of water and wastewater treatment chemistry and processes.
  • Field or laboratory analytical skills, including sampling techniques, wet-chemistry methods, portable instrumentation and data-quality practices.
  • Understanding of chemical handling, storage and transport requirements, including DOT/HazMat, OSHA HazCom, SDS and safe delivery practices.
  • Mechanical aptitude with metering pumps, instrumentation and hand tools; ability to read P&IDs and equipment manuals.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage inventory forecasts, delivery schedules and reporting across multiple sites.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and field data or CRM tools.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work as a team member and maintain integrity, maturity and accountability in a remote, self-managed role.
  • B.S. in Chemistry, Environmental Science, Engineering or a related technical field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 2–5 years of customer-facing water/wastewater treatment, industrial chemical service or equivalent experience.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to meet the stated physical demands, including frequent lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling of up to 60 pounds, and to work in the described site environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with odor, sulfide, disinfection or nutrient control.
  • Hands-on sampling and analysis and chemical feed equipment experience.
  • Wastewater operator certification.
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER training.

Responsibilities

  • Collect routine and event-driven grab and composite samples from influent, process and effluent points in accordance with customer, USP and regulatory protocols, including chain-of-custody, preservation, labeling and holding-time requirements.
  • Perform on-site water and wastewater analyses using portable instruments and wet-chemistry methods, including pH, ORP, residual oxidant or peroxide, dissolved sulfide, dissolved oxygen, alkalinity, turbidity and jar or bench testing.
  • Calibrate and maintain field instruments; record, review and trend results, validate data quality, identify out-of-spec conditions and recommend feed-rate or program adjustments.
  • Prepare and deliver customer reports, system surveys and data summaries documenting performance against contract targets; coordinate confirmatory or compliance analyses with third-party laboratories.
  • Monitor chemical inventory and consumption, forecast usage and schedule deliveries to prevent stock-outs while minimizing excess inventory and freight costs.
  • Coordinate chemical deliveries with suppliers, carriers, USP logistics and customer personnel; oversee bulk and packaged transfers to ensure safe handling, correct tank delivery and compliance with applicable protocols.
  • Inspect chemical storage areas, tanks, containment and unloading equipment; verify labeling, SDS availability and secondary-containment integrity.
  • Maintain delivery, inventory and usage records, reconcile deliveries against orders, and support monthly forecasting and invoicing.
  • Inspect and perform preventive maintenance on chemical feed systems, including metering pumps, tubing, injection quills, flow meters, level sensors, analyzers and control panels.
  • Troubleshoot common feed-system faults, perform minor repairs, and escalate issues requiring service or engineering support.
  • Verify and adjust feed rates to program targets; maintain maintenance logs, spare-parts inventories and equipment records for each site.
  • Serve as the day-to-day contact for plant operators, supervisors and environmental staff; conduct site walk-throughs and program review meetings.
  • Communicate results, recommendations, safety concerns and out-of-spec conditions promptly to customers and the USP account team, following customer and company protocols.
