About The Position

Bluefors is seeking an Application Engineer who thrives on building and troubleshooting complex scientific instruments while working closely with researchers. In this role, you’ll serve as a trusted technical partner to scientists and engineers in fields such as quantum materials, superconducting devices, cryogenic physics, precision transport, scanning probe systems, and advanced microscopy. You’ll engage directly with customers to understand their experimental goals, identify system-level challenges, and translate those needs into practical wiring and infrastructure solutions aligned with Bluefors’ capabilities. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on scientific dialogue and lab environments—whether your background is in experimental physics, apparatus development, system integration, or a customer-facing technical role. Experience with cryogenic experiments, vacuum or high-field systems, RF or photonics setups, or complex hardware integration is valuable. Above all, success in this role depends on strong communication skills, technical intuition, and a genuine commitment to helping customers design and implement effective, cutting-edge experimental solutions. The base salary range for this role varies by geographic location and level of experience Final compensation will be determined based on experience, skills, and other job-related factors. Chicago, IL: $110,000 – $130,000 Brooklyn, NY: $125,000 – $145,000

Requirements

  • BS, MS, or PhD in physics, electrical engineering, or related field
  • 1–3 years of relevant experience in industry, research, or advanced laboratory environments
  • Experience with advanced experimental setups (cryogenics, RF/microwave, vacuum systems, high-field environments, or precision instrumentation)
  • Strong customer-facing communication skills — you enjoy collaborating, asking questions, and explaining complex ideas clearly
  • Ability to translate experimental requirements into actionable engineering solutions
  • Proactive, reliable, and comfortable working across teams
  • Excellent command of English, written and spoken

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with dilution refrigerators, cryogenic measurements, or quantum device platforms
  • Understanding of wiring design (attenuation, filtering, thermal anchoring, mechanical integration)
  • Familiarity with high-density cryogenic connectors, optical links, or specialized feedthroughs
  • Ability to work effectively with both researchers and engineers to solve practical hardware challenges
  • Passion for advancing next-generation measurement infrastructure

Responsibilities

  • Work directly with customers to understand their measurement goals and translate them into wiring and infrastructure solutions
  • Serve as a technical point of contact — asking the right questions, clarifying requirements, and guiding decision-making
  • Support the system-level design of cryogenic wiring, signal chains, and experimental interconnects
  • Collaborate with Sales, Engineering, and Research teams to develop proposals and system configurations
  • Visit customer labs, participate in technical discussions, and help optimize real setups in the field
  • Document customer needs, provide clear communication throughout projects, and ensure smooth execution
  • Travel to customer sites, conferences, and partner locations as needed
  • Additional duties as required
