About The Position

Sanford Health, the largest rural health system in the United States, is dedicated to transforming the health care experience and providing access to world-class health care in America’s heartland. This position involves inpatient coverage of the Labor and Delivery Unit, with rotating 12-hour shifts and every 2-3 weekends. Tasks include assisting the MD with admissions, ED Consultations, GYN Consultations, First Assisting on Labor and Delivery and in the Operating Room, and labor management. The role also includes backup deliveries and amniotomies as scope allows. The APP provides midwifery care for patients with obstetric and gynecologic needs during labor, delivery, and postpartum, identifying additional needs for mothers and babies in birthing units. The job description includes monitoring patients' condition during pregnancies, including co-management of high-risk pregnancies, and performing examinations and procedures. It also involves monitoring fetal development, maintaining medical records, providing guidance to expectant mothers, and providing comprehensive care and education for women and their families across various life stages. The APP may order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe medications, and conduct physical examinations. Midwifery care encompasses a full range of primary health care services for women, including health promotion, disease prevention, and individualized wellness education and counseling, provided in partnership with women and families in diverse settings.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree, Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) or Doctorate in Philosophy (PhD) level education required from an approved accredited nursing educational program of the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM) and American Midwifery Certification Board Medical (AMCB)
  • Currently holds an unencunmbered license as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) based on state requirements and Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM)
  • Must maintain current registered nursing (RN) license and APRN CNM licensure where the practice is occurring and/or possess multistate licensure if in a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state
  • Must work within the legal scope of practice and subject to the states’ legal constraints and regulations for all licenses held
  • Required to pass certification examination as stipulated by the appropriate state board
  • Must obtain and maintain appointment at their respective Sanford facility
  • Obtain and maintain approval of applicable scope of practice
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required
  • Must provide Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration number
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Obtains and subsequently maintains required department specific competencies and certifications

  • Maintain and record information in medical records or provide narrative summaries to communicate patient information to other health care providers
  • Provides guidance to expectant mothers in prenatal self-care, e.g. nutrition, weight gain, and daily activity levels
  • Provides prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, newborn, inter-conceptional, well-woman, and gynecologic care and education for women and their families
  • Maintains records of patient conditions and test results within care plans
  • May order and interpret diagnostic or laboratory tests as well as prescribe medications as permitted by state regulations
  • Midwifery as practiced by certified nurse-midwives (CNM) and certified midwives (CM) encompasses a full range of primary health care services for women from adolescence beyond menopause
  • These services include primary care, gynecologic and family planning services, preconception care, care during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period, care of the normal newborn during the first 28 days of life, and treatment of male partners for sexually transmitted infections
  • Midwives provide initial and ongoing comprehensive assessment, diagnosis and treatment
  • They conduct physical examinations; prescribe medications including controlled substances and contraceptive methods; admit, manage and discharge patients; order and interpret laboratory and diagnostic tests and order the use of medical devices
  • Midwifery care also includes health promotion, disease prevention, and individualized wellness education and counseling
  • These services are provided in partnership with women and families in diverse settings such as ambulatory care clinics, private offices, community and public health systems, homes, hospitals and birth centers
