Paraprofessionals support students and do not generally have child specific assignments, but rather are assigned to a classroom or classrooms. They provide general support to a classroom or classrooms, including academic support and carry-over of lessons developed by the teacher and special education teacher. Paraprofessionals are responsible for implementing accommodations and modifications, developing materials, and creating opportunities for students to be independent. They may also be assigned to multiple/different classroom grade levels and implement behavioral/social support plans. They provide small- or whole-group assistance to both regular education and special education students, engage learners in instructional activities, and share relevant information with teachers and school personnel. Support is also provided in accessing technology, completing documentation, and collecting data related to academic functioning. Facilitating positive relationships, supporting organization of materials, and assisting with arrival/dismissal are also key duties. Paraprofessionals may be assigned to different buildings based on student population and census, and must ensure IEP accommodations are implemented. They support students during specials, lunch, and recess, and maintain student confidentiality. Other assignments designated by the Principal may also be carried out.
