About The Position

The purpose of this classification is to care for and/or euthanize animals at the County Shelter, assist citizens with animal control related issues, operate a transit van or similar vehicle to/from distant locations transporting animals to/from designated addresses and to perform clerical and administrative duties that support shelter operations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • One year of experience caring for animals
  • Possess and maintain a Georgia valid driver’s license
  • Must be able to work independently and be self-motivated.
  • Treat all animals humanely, with compassion and concern, both on and off the job and transmits these values to others.

Responsibilities

  • Receives incoming calls and visitors; responds to inquiries; provides information; advises citizens of animal control issues, animal care, humane treatment, rabies precautions and other related topics; coordinates animal adoptions; and receives and returns animals to/from owners.
  • Coordinates operational activities with County-retained veterinarian and Sheriff’s Department.
  • Operates a transit van or similar vehicle to/from distant locations transporting animals to/from designated addresses.
  • Maintaining the animals’ welfare during transport and insuring proper transfer paper work is filled out and delivered per rules and regulations.
  • Implements standard operating procedures for disaster plans involving animal control issues; and coordinates activities with the County Emergency Management Agency.
  • Communicate with rescue groups and other shelters via email, fax, or by phone regarding rescue candidates’ needs.
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with key personnel from rescue groups, shelters, and other placement agencies.
  • Provides assistance to the public looking to contact breed-specific rescue groups.
  • Work closely with the Animal Shelter Director to develop the best plan for animals being considered for rescue.
  • Evaluate the health of potential rescue candidates with the help of the Animal Shelter Director.
  • Assist in providing the necessary services for the humane care of animals at the Shelter to include sanitation of animal housing areas, providing food, water and maintaining cleanliness of the assigned area.
  • Receives, classifies and cares for animals in the Shelter’s custody; evaluates animals and determines placement; cleans, feeds and waters animals; classifies animals as diseased or dangerous; schedules and conducts euthanasia on animals as appropriate; and disposes of euthanized animals according to health and sanitary standards.
  • Cleans cages, kennels and shelter facilities; maintains equipment and vehicles; and delivers animal traps.
  • Prepares paperwork, records and documentation; calculates animal dispositions; enters information into department databases; updates databases and spreadsheets; prepares and/or processes purchase orders and budgeting information; maintains department files; and prepares timesheets and monthly and annual reports.
  • Maintains inventory of equipment, materials and supplies, including controlled substances; and procures supplies as needed.
  • The person must be familiar with social media and uploading information pertaining to animals at the shelter.
  • This classification serves as the main point of contact for all Georgia licensed rescue agencies regarding all animal transfers.
  • Clean and disinfect all equipment needed for transport including crates, vehicles, and other supplies.
  • Operates a personal computer and general office equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database or other system software; and operates animal control equipment and materials.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
